1. Indeed, whenever they were

    told, “Say thus-and-so”

  2. about matters in whose

    utterance the Sacred Law sees no harm,

  3. they hastened at once

    to the bidding of whoever said so.

  4. And by destiny they were preserved

    for lofty stations; therefore

  5. the youngest of the company—the one who

    cast his own desire aside—

  6. you see as a luminary,

    a consummate master of many sciences,

  7. keeping faithful company with his guidance,

    holding himself aloof from passion.

  8. Everyone whom Fortune has

    favored herein has made

  9. his own resolve his champion,

    and it has mastered him.

  10. They give no ear to anyone who

    utters lies and raves.

  11. By this they have become known,

    so they scorn such men; and thus

  12. the company’s elder has, within

    his protective fold, taken him in.

  13. Therefore you behold him

    forever chosen.

  14. Such is the lot of the one whom

    they appointed so.
