1. When I cried, “O God,” an “At Your service!” answered from deep within.

    Then I listened toward the voice, while the eye lay beneath a veil.

  2. My witnessing said, as I contemplated my Witness,

    when the divine night rose amid the darkening dusk:

  3. “For I am the Odd, whom your essence has not made even,

    for you are among the mourners at nightfall.

  4. And if you wish, say: the eye within me is His eye.

    And if He stretches ropes from it toward our very essences,

  5. and my eye and His come there bearing my attribute,

    then He who forbade bribes accepts the loan.

  6. Whoever is in such a state is a witness

    to this: that reason, amid thought, is veiled.

  7. For there is nothing there but unveiling, nothing besides it.

    Through it the veils are lifted at once, if He wills.

  8. There is no veil there, except that I myself posited it;

    and whoever accepts deficiency may accept the Peripatetic school.

  9. He is the radiant moon therein, just as

    He is the sun, the embroidered meadow, and the young gazelle.
