لما تأدبتَ بي يا منتهى ألمي

وأحسنَ الناسِ في المعنى وفي الصورِ

When you were well-mannered with me, O ultimate pain of mine

And the best of people in meaning and in form

وكان قد ملكت قلبي محاسنُها

خبراً تحققه يربى على الخبرِ

And her beauty had possessed my heart

News to be verified that grows upon news

ألبستُها من سنى الأثوابِ ثوبَ تُقى

فخراً على جنسِها من خِرقةِ الخضر

I dressed her in the clothes of my years with a garment of piety

Proudly over her kind from the green patch

وهي التأدُّب بالآدابِ أجمعها

مع التخلُّق بالآياتِ والسُّوَرِ

And it is good manners with all manners

With good morals from the verses and suras

والعهدُ ما بيننا أنْ لا تبوح بها

ولا تعرّفُها شخصاً من البَشَر

And the covenant between us is that you do not confide in her

Nor introduce her to any person

لكي تكونَ من الإخلاص نشأتُها

فليس يلحقها شيءٌ من الغَيرِ

So that her sincerity may be her upbringing

And so nothing of others attaches itself to her
