I'm drunk with drinking from a cheek though my lips are dry,

As I yearn for a heart from my heart,

For my beloved has a beauty special to him -

I rave with passion for him, whether far or near.

I talk to him in my sleep acting out our love,

And when I wake I return to my companions.

If we're apart, yearning renews; if together,

I'm content when contentment comes my way.

If he indulges me by acting in my waking state,

That's sweeter to me than fresh sweet water.

When I see his house I crave entering,

But at the door are robes more wondrous.

Behind it is a gatekeeper who hears my footsteps

And pays no heed to me in his wonder.

Like a threshold growing arrogant from being

The site of visits from the Near.

It's the Mother - he named it compliant toward his creation,

Yet it turned from me like one who's sinned,

Modestly giving me her braids to walk by,

So I walk by my Lord's command.

If this is the Mother's state, then I

Am more deserving than her until my love is done.

I wished from him to be in her state,

In a life of ease with God, without distress,

So my existence comes making claims

That would bring him down to the status of my Lord.

Alas! How far is the truth from the state of His creation,

When His scriptures have been sent with His messengers?

My soul has plunged me into intricate tales

Of the spirit, my secret, God and my heart,

Saying that my existence is His essence and my identity

His identity. So set sail on a rugged ship!

Nothing remains in us with strength

I can witness unless through His eye.

How can this be when a loyal friend has come

And sometimes reproaches me, and I wonder at his reproach!

Speaking truth, the self has provided evidence for itself

Regarding what I mentioned of reproach:

"I am the servant of Him who is my Lord -

The passion I spoke of was my love for Him."
