ألف لام ميم وذلك ما أردنا
من إنزالِ الكتابِ على وجودِ
A thousand signs, that is what we wanted
To reveal this book to existence
ألف لام ميم سجيِّ ليس يَفنى
لما يعطي الفناء من الجحودِ
A thousand signs, eternal, never perishing
Immune from any destruction or denial
ألف لام ميم بصادٍ عند صاد
لو أرد علمه عند الشهود
A thousand signs, unambiguous to the discerning
Were I to will its knowledge to the witnessed
ألف لام را لسابقة أتينا
بصِدق الوعد لا صدق الوعيد
A thousand signs, preceded, we came
With the truth of the promise, not of the threat
ألف لام را لقد عظمت أمراً
يشيب لهو له رأسُ الوليد
A thousand signs, truly a momentous affair
That grays the hair of the young and old
ألف لام را مبشرة تجلت
بسجدتها على رغمِ الحسود
A thousand signs, good tidings revealed
Bowing despite the envious
ألف لام ميم ورا لوميضِ برقٍ
يبشِّرني بإقبالِ الرعود
A thousand signs, a lightning flash glimmers
Heralding the coming rains
ألف لام را أنست به خليلاً
إلى يومِ النشورِ من الصعيدِ
A thousand signs, forgot a friend
To resurrection day from the grave
ألف لام را بميزانٍ صَدوقٍ
فصَلَت به المرادَ من المريد
A thousand signs, with honest scales
Clarifying intention from desire
وكاف ها يا يربُعهن عين
إلى صاد تطأطأ للسجود
Kaf ha ya 'ayn, O four symbols
Bowing down before the Almighty
وطاها ما رأيتُ له نظير
إذا حضر المشاهد بالشهيد
Ta ha, none have I seen its equal
If the witnessed attend with the martyr
وطاسين ميم يضيقُ لها صدورٌ
وروحُ الشِّعر في بيتِ القصيد
Ta sin mim, breasts are straitened
The soul of poetry is in the ode
وطاسين جاء مقتبساً لنارٍ
وكلَّمه المهيمنُ بالوجود
Ta sin, brought kindled fire
And the Sustainer spoke to existence
وطاسين ميم قتلت به قتيلاً
لينقله إلى ضيقِِ اللحود
Ta sin mim, with it I killed a victim
To transfer him to the narrow enclosure
ألف لام ميم لأوهن بيت شخصٍ
تولع بالذبابِ من الصّيود
A thousand signs, I made fragile an arrogant structure
Consuming insects from nests
ألف لام ميم غُلبت الرومُ فيه
ليغلبني بآياتٍ المزيد
A thousand signs, Rome was defeated by it
To defeat me with further signs
ألف لام ميم ليحفظ بي وصايا
سرتْ في الكونِ من بيضٍ وسود
A thousand signs, to protect me by commandments
Roaming creation, black and white
ألف لام ميم ينزل من مقامٍ
إلهي إلى حالِ العبيد
A thousand signs, descending from
A divine station to one of servants
وياسين قلبُ قرآن عظيمٍ
له التمجيد من كَرَم المجيد
Ya sin, heart of great Qur'an
His is the Praise from the Bountiful
وصاد شكركم إياه شرعاً
وعقلاً سارياً طلب المزيد
Saad, thanking Him legislatively
And rationally, seeking increase
وحاميم غافراً ذنباً مبيراً
حمدت بحمده حمد الحميد
Ha mim the Forgiver of grievous sins
I praise with His Praise, Praise of the Praised
وحاميم فصلت ْآياتِ قولٍ
فداه بالطريفِ وبالتليد
Ha mim clarifying eloquent words
Ransoming with warmth and tradition
وحاميم عين سين القافُ منه
بتنزيه المشاهد من بعيد
Ha mim a discerning eye from it
Transcending the witnessed from afar
وحاميم قامَ بالدرجاتِ فينا
يسخرنا بأبنيةِ العقود
Ha mim establishing by steps among us
Subjugating us with celestial structures
وحاميم دخنةٌ لعذاب قوم
اليم في عقوبته شديد
Ha mim a smoke for the torment of folk
Intense in His severe punishment
وحاميم قد جثتْ لقدومِ شخصٍ
حقيقةَ عينه ظهرتْ بجود
Ha mim, bowing to an arrival
Reality of His Eye emerging kindly
وحاميم لقد تفرَّد في اجتماعٍ
ليلحقَ بالصعود من الصعيد
Ha mim singled out in a gathering
To ascend from the human plain
وقاف أنزلته مني بخسر
نزول الروح من حبلِ الوريد
Qaf, I reveal it from Me in loss
Descent of the Soul from the vein's rope
ونون أقلامه قد فصلته
ليعلم خصمها صدقّ الشهود
Noon, Its pens clarified it
To teach its opponents the truth of witnesses
رمزتْ حقائقاً فيها معان
علتْ من أنْ تحصلَ بالقصود
Symbolizing esoteric meanings
Elevated from attainment by pursuit
وليس ينالها كرماً وجوداً
إذا حققتها غير السعيد
And none attains it graciously or essentially
If realized beyond the fortunate
طلبتُ وجودُه من غير حدِّ
فقال العلم عيني في الحدود
I sought its existence without limit
Knowledge said my eye is bounded
ألا إنّ البراءةَ من قيودٍ
لأوثقُ ما يكون من القيودِ
Lo, detachment from constraints
Is the strongest of constraints
