When I read a book not found within Your record,
I knew that, from mere tidings of You, I had not known the matter.
If Your bounty has encompassed all existence, then
there is no letter in the cosmos that You see outside Your record.
You are existence itself; nothing in the cosmos is other than You—
either Your being, or something born of Your trace.
For all is You, and from You comes the whole affair;
to You it returns, in the verses of Your suras.
If I am Your very self—and if I am not, still I am—
in every state, ours, so long as I have not passed beyond Your gaze.
Through us You were described, just as through You I was described.
So say, “Indeed,” or “Yes”: all is measured by You.
Glory to Him before whose majesty all faces bow;
and all is He—before whom, then, do they bow, in your view?
I marvel at the splendors of the Face, restrained
by the veils let down from burning all within Your sight.
Nor do the lights of Your Face burn those veils;
thus interpret what I have lodged in Your scriptures.
Say to the one who seeks You among the worlds:
“You have failed—by God, deluded one—in your journey.”
My Lord, this is the one whose tale I told:
Your grace rescued him in Your pre-dawn hour.
Never in evening converse did I attain a radiant wisdom
like what I attained at night from conversing with You.
So preserve for me the sciences whose ultimate end is You,
and protect Your humble servant, O God, from all but You.
Then He said to me: “From My being, your good is in My hand,
and every harm you see comes from your own harm.”
And the secret is not for you—thus have
the texts pronounced it, though I know it not from your nature.
