غن الطبيعةَ أعطت في عناصرها

أحكامها بالذي فيها من أسماءِ

Nature bestowed within her elements

Her governing powers through the names contained in them:

يبس الترابِ إلى برد المياهِ إلى

تسخينِ نارٍ إلى ترطيبِ أهواء

The dryness of earth, then the coolness of water, then

The heat of fire, then the moistness of air.

لأجل ذا كان خلقُ الناسِ من حمأ

ومن هواء ومن نارٍ ومن ماء

For this reason humankind was fashioned from dark mud,

From air, from fire, and from water.

فتلك أربعة أعطتك أربعة

دماً وبلغمٌ في صَفراً وسوداء

Those four bestowed four upon you:

Blood and phlegm, yellow bile and black bile.

أعوانهم مثلهم جذبٌ ودفعُ أذى

عنا وهضمٌ وإمساك لأدواء

Their helpers, like them, are attraction and the expulsion of harm

From us, digestion, and retention against disease.
