1. القى الهوى في القلب ما ألقى

    فلا تسل عن كنُه ما ألقى

    Love cast in my heart what it cast

    So ask not about the nature of what it cast

  2. لقيتُ منه الجهد في لذة

    لأنني عبدٌ له حقا

    I found in it pleasure in suffering

    For I am truly its slave

  3. أضلنا الله على علمنا

    به فما أعذبَ ما نلقى

    God misguided us knowingly

    About it so how sweet is what we encounter

  4. تعبَّدَ القلبُ هواه فما

    ينفكُّ قلبي للهوى رقا

    The heart enslaved itself to its passion so my heart

    Cannot detach from love even slightly

  5. رقيتُ للحبِّ إلى راحة

    ملذوذة غيري بها يشقى

    I became tender to love until comfort

    Delightful, others suffer from it

  6. لما درى بأنني عبدُه

    قضى بضربي الغرب والشرقا

    When it realized I am its slave

    It decreed my striking east and west

  7. قد دبَّت فيما حاز من رِقّة

    ومن جمالٍ والهوى عِشقا

    It crept into what it seized of tenderness

    And beauty and passionate love

  8. والله لو أنَّ الذي عندنا

    منه بأقوى جبلٍ شقا

    By God if what we have of it

    Were on the strongest mountain it would crack

  9. قد رقَّ لي الشامت مما يرى

    وحسبكم من شامِتٍ رقا

    The gloaters softened for me from what they see

    And it suffices you from gloaters slight softening

  10. ما إن رأينا في الهوى عاذلا

    إلا ولا بُدَّ له يلقى

    We did not see anyone blaming love

    Except that he inevitably encounters

  11. مثلَ الذي يلقاه ذو لوعةٍ

    وهو الذي سُمِّي بالأشقى

    Like one who has anguish

    Who is called the most miserable

  12. كما الذي قد اتقى نفسه

    وربُّه سماه بالأتقى

    As one who protected himself

    And his Lord named him the most pious

  13. فاشربه مرَّا ولذيذاً فما

    بكاسٍ غير الحبِّ ما تسقى

    So drink it bitter and sweet and nothing

    But love you will be quenched with a cup

  14. ألا ترى موسى وما موله

    أعطاه ما أمل والصّعقا

    Don’t you see Moses and his encounter

    He gave him what he hoped and thunder

  15. فكان موسى صادقاً في الذي

    قد جاء يبغيه به صِدقا

    So Moses was truthful in what

    Came seeking it from him in truth

  16. فعندما رُدَّ إلى حسه

    تابَ ووفى العهدَ واستبقى

    When he regained his consciousness

    He repented and fulfilled the covenant and endured

  17. وكلما كانَ له بعد ذا

    مما رأى من ربه وفقا

    And everything he had after that

    From his Lord suitably

  18. أثمر فيه ذاك من ربه

    في ليلة الإسرا بنا رفقا

    That yielded for him from his Lord

    During the night of ascension gently

  19. وعاين الروحَ وقد جاءه

    إذ سدَّ بالأجنحة الأفقا

    And saw the Spirit coming to him

    As it blocked the horizon with wings

  20. يخبره أن السماءَ التي

    ترى وأرضا كانتا رتقا

    Telling him that the sky

    You see and earth were seamless

  21. فحكمُ الفصلِ بها والقضا

    فصيراها حكمة فتقا

    So the decree of judgment made them

    Into wisdom articulately

  22. لا يشربُ الخالص عبد هنا

    من كلِّ ما يشرب إذ يُسقى

    No servant drinks the pure here

    Of everything he drinks when quenched

  23. من كان أمشاجاً من أخلاطه

    فكيف لا يشربه ريقا

    One who is temperaments of his mixtures

    How can he not drink it moistly?

  24. مَن يبتغي العصمةَ في حالة

    دائمة يستلزم الصدقا

    Whoever seeks infallibility in a state

    Constantly necessitates truthfulness

  25. والصدقُ لا شكَّ على ما ترى

    أنزله الله لنا رِزقا

    And truthfulness undoubtedly as you see

    God revealed to us as sustenance

  26. فيأخذ العبد على قدره

    منه كمثل الرزق لا فرقا

    So the servant takes of it according to his measure

    Like sustenance without difference

  27. ما أن رأينا في الهوى حاكما

    أبقى ولا أتقى ولا أنقى

    We did not see anyone judging love

    Remaining, or more pious, or purer

  28. مثل الذي يعرف مقداره

    فإنه قد حازه سَبْقا

    Like one who knows his measure

    For he attained it with excellence

  29. العلمُ يستعمل أصحابه

    لا بد منه فالزمِ الحقا

    Knowledge makes its people use it

    It is inevitable so hold to the truth

  30. فإنّ قوماً لم يقولوا بذا

    لجهلهم بالعلمِ أو فسقا

    For some people did not say this

    Out of ignorance of knowledge or sin
