صحتُ بالكوكبِ المنير عشاءً
يا نظيرَ النورِ بدرَ الصباحِ
I woke at dawn to the radiant planet,
O peerless light, O full moon of the morn!
يا حبيبي وهل عليّ إذا ما
جئتكم عن حقيقةٍ من جناحِ
O my love, have I any fault
If I come asking about a truth from your wing?
أين سرُّ الوصالِ بالله قل لي
منكما في الطلاق أو في النكاحِ
Where is the secret of union with God? Tell me,
Is it in divorce or in marriage?
عملٌ هل يصح في ازدواج
أي وتهيام بالوجوهِ الصباح
Can a deed be valid in bigamy?
Or raving deliriously at rosy-cheeked faces?
نكح المغرب الصباح فأبدى
ربّنا عند ذاك نورَ الصّلاح
The West married the dawn; thereupon
Our Lord revealed the light of righteousness.
فأنارت أرض الوجودِ وأبدت
كلَّ شيء مخبأ في البطاح
It illumined the land of existence and showed
Everything hidden in the lowlands.
ثمّ غابا عن الوجودِ زمانا
حين حلّت عساكرُ الاقتراح
Then the two were absent from existence a time
When the armies of proposal arrived.
وأقاما بربوةِ المحو حتى
ما أهلّت أهلة الافتتاح
They stayed on the hill of annihilation
Until the time came for inauguration.
قيل يا كوكبان هُبا بخير
كمهبِّ الجنوبِ بين الرياح
It was said, “O two planets, shine with goodness
Like the blowing of the south wind among the winds.”
وانعما بالشهودِ حالاً وعلماً
واسعيا للصلاةِ عند الرَّواحِ
Delight in witnessing, now and learnedly,
And strive for prayer at the time of spirits.
ثم لما مَنَّ الكريمُ عليهم
باتصالِ الذواتِ بعد انتزاحِ
Then when the Generous One favored them
With the union of essences after separation,
قلت ليت الإله يشرح صدري
لعلومٍ تُنالُ دون تلاحي
I said, “Would that God expand my breast
For sciences to be got without contention.”
جاءني الكوكبُ العليُّ رسولاً
من حكيمٍ مهيمنٍ فتَّاح
The Supreme Planet came to me as a messenger
From a Wise One, All-disposing, All-unlocking.
قال يا سائلَ الكريم علوماً
ما على عالمٍ بها من جُناح
He said, “O asker of the Generous One for sciences
That no knower has power over,
إن تكن تحسن استماعَ خطابي
خُذ حباك الإله بالانشراحِ
If you are good at listening to my discourse,
Take the love your God gives with composure.
فعلُ أشباحنا على الروح يبدو
وكذا فعله على الأشباح
The deeds of our bodies appear in the spirit
And so His deed appears in bodies.”
حكمة مهَّد الحكيمُ ثَراها
وبَنا سقفها لأمرٍ مُتاح
The Wise One prepared its groundwork, wisdom,
And built its ceiling for an accessible thing.
يا أخي قم تر حبيبك عيناً
فاعلاً في الجسومِ والأرواح
O brother, rise and see your love with an eye
Acting in bodies and spirits.
