1. إني بنيتُ علمي باسلافي

    ومن صحبت من أشيخي وآلافي

    I built my knowledge on my ancestors,

    And from the company of my sheikhs and comrades,

  2. فما أصلّي بهم إلا قرأت لهم

    من القرآن لما فيه لأيلافِ

    So I do not pray with them except I recite to them,

    From the Quran for what is in it for people.

  3. فالا فانَّ الذي في العبد من صفة

    عين الحبيبِ فهذا عين إنصافِ

    Unless the attributes in the servant are the eyes,

    Of the Beloved, so this is the eye of fairness.

  4. نفسي تنازعني إذا أطهرها

    والخف في قدمي من نزع أخفافي

    Myself argues with me when I purify it,

    And the dust on my feet from taking off my slippers.

  5. وكيف أنزعها وقد لبستهما

    على طهارةِ أقدامي بأوصافي

    And how can I take them off when I wore them,

    With the purity of my feet and my attributes.

  6. إن اتصافي بنعت الحقِّ بعدني

    منه وقربني بنعتِ أسلافي

    That I be characterized after being distanced,

    From Him and brought near by the attributes of my ancestors.

  7. عجز وفقر إلى ربي ومسكنة

    إلى سؤالٍ بإلحاح وإلحاف

    Disability and poverty to my Lord and humiliation,

    With insistent request and encirclement.

  8. إلى رفيق لطيف مشفق حذر

    وما أنا بالعتل الجمعص الجافي

    To a gentle, caring and cautious companion,

    And I am not stiff, dry and barren.

  9. إلى ذكرت الذي عليه معتمدي

    سبحانه كنت فيه المثبت النافي

    When I remembered the one I depend on,

    Glory be to Him, I was the confirmer and the denier.

  10. فالنفي تنزيهه عن كلِّ حادثة

    من الصفات التي فيهنّ إتلافي

    So denial is purifying Him from every accident,

    Of attributes in which there is discrepancy.

  11. ولست أثبت للرحمن من صفة

    إلا التي قالها في قوله الكافي

    And I do not prove for the Merciful a description,

    Except what He said in His saying, the sufficient.

  12. لله ميزانُ عدل في خليقته

    فإن وزنت فإني الرجحُ الوافي

    God has a scale of justice in His creation,

    So if I weighed, I am the outweighing witness.

  13. أنا مريضٌ ودائي ليس يعرفه

    إلا العليم بحالي الراحم الشافي

    I am sick and none knows my illness,

    Except the All-Knowing of my state, the Merciful Healer.

  14. إن التستر بالعاداتِ من خلقي

    فما أنا علمٌ كبشرٍ الحافي

    That hiding in customs is from my nature,

    So I am no knowledge like an uncovered human.

  15. إنَّ التخلقَ بالأسماء يظهر ما

    يكون حليته بالمشهد الخافي

    That acting with names reveals what,

    Would be its adornment in the hidden scene.

  16. العبد يرسب يبغي أصلَ نشأته

    والغيرُ متصفٌ بالمدعي الطافي

    The servant fails, seeking the origin of his growth,

    While the other is characterized as the inflated claimant.

  17. ثوبي قصير كما جاء الخطاب به

    وثوبُ ديني ثوبٌ ذيله ضافي

    My dress is short as the address came with it,

    And the dress of my religion is a dress with a trailing edge.

  18. مياه أهل الدعاوى غير رائقة

    وماء مثلي ذاك الرائق الصافي

    The waters of the people of claims are not delicious,

    And water like mine is the pure delicious.

  19. ديار أهل القوى في الخلق عامرة

    ودار أهل المعالي رسمها عافي

    The homes of the people of power in creation are inhabited,

    And the abode of the people of glory, its mark is brilliant.

  20. يجود عند سؤالي كل مكرمة

    ربي عليَّ بإنعام وإسعافِ

    My Lord bestows upon me every generosity,

    When I ask, with blessings and increase.

  21. لقد علمتُ بأنَّ الله ذو كرم

    وأن فينا له خفيَّ ألطافِ

    I knew that Allah is Generous,

    And that He has hidden subtleties upon us.

  22. أثنيت بالجودِ عن فقر وعن ضرر

    على الإله فجازاني بإسعافي

    I praised Him for generosity from poverty and harm,

    So He rewarded me with increase.

  23. كما وردٍ إذا الداريّ يمرجه

    بما يطيبه من ماءِ خلاف

    As a pasture, when the rainmaker waters it,

    With what improves it from different water.

  24. فبالأكفِّ جيادُ الخيل إن سبقتْ

    نمسِ منها بأجيادٍ وأعرافِ

    So with palms the generosity of horses, if they surpassed

    The swiftness of them with generosity and honor.

  25. لا تفرحن باستواءِ الكفين إذا

    أعمالكم وزنت من أجل أعراف

    Do not rejoice in the equivalence of the two palms if

    Your deeds are weighed for the sake of honor.

  26. وأكثر الذكر للرحمن في ملأ

    من الملائك سادات وأشرف

    And mention the Merciful frequently in an assembly,

    Of angels, chieftains, and nobles.

  27. واحذر قبولك رفداً قد أتيت به

    عن التشوُّق منكم أو عن إسرافِ

    And beware of accepting a gift I came with,

    Out of your longing or extravagance.

  28. إن الغريبَ مصون في تقلبه

    كلؤلؤِ صينَ في أجوافِ أصداف

    The stranger is protected in his ups and downs,

    Like Chinese pearls in the shells of oyster shells.

  29. إنَّ الكريمَ تولاه بجائزةٍ

    تترى عليه وإنعامٌ وإرداف

    The Generous takes care of him with reward,

    Continuous upon him, and favors and succession.

  30. لو جاء من أسهم البلوى على حذرٍ

    من المصابِ لجاءته بآلافِ

    If an arrow of tribulation came to him cautiously,

    From affliction, arrows of thousands would come to him.

  31. إنَّ العبيد أولي الألباب قد نصبوا

    لرمي أسهمٍ بلواه كاهدافِ

    The righteous servants have set up

    To shoot arrows of his tribulations like targets.

  32. الله عاصمهم من كلِّ نازلةٍ

    بما يجن من ألطاف وأعطافِ

    Allah protects them from every calamity,

    With what He produces of subtleties and compassions.

  33. من عند ربٍّ خفيّ بي ومكتنفٍ

    وعاصمٍ بالذي يسدي وعطاف

    From a Lord hidden to me and encompassing,

    And protecting with that which He bestows and compassions.

  34. من الجميلِ الذي ما زال يرفده

    بمثله ليعمّ الخير أكنافي

    From the Beautiful One who has not ceased to provide him,

    With the like of Himself to spread good around me.
