المرجفان هما الإبريقُ والطاسُ

والأحمران كذاك اللحم ُوالراحُ

The two pitchers are the jug and bowl,

And the two reds are likewise meat and wine.

والشحمُ ثم الشبابُ الأبيضان إلى

شهود هذين نفسُ القوم ترتاحُ

Fat and youth's whiteness then,

To witness these two, people's souls find peace.

والتمر والماءُ عندي الأسودان يرى

كأنه في ظلامِ الليلِ مصباحُ

Dates and water, to me the two blacks, it seems

As if a lamp in the darkness of night.

الجاه والذهبُ المسكوكُ نعتهما

الأصفران ووجه التبر وَضَّاح

Glory and minted gold - their description -

The two yellows, and the smiling face of gold coins,

إذا تجلى لك المطلوبُ فيه بدت

لناظرِ القلبِ في الأشباح أرواح

When the sought appears through it, there appeared

To the onlooker's heart among specters, spirits.

هي المعاني قد راحت وما برحت

قد قيدتها عن التسريح أشباح

They are meanings that have passed and not passed,

Chained by specters against release.

لو أنها سألت عنهم جماعتهم

لقال قائلهم راحوا وما راحوا

If you asked their groups about them,

Their speaker would say they left and did not leave.

في فقد ما قلته الآلام أجمعها

كما بوجد إنها للنفسِ أفراحُ

In missing what you said, all sorrows together

Are like joy to the soul.

إني نصحتكم لما رحتكمُ

وذا الوجودُ قليلٌ فيه نصَّاح

I advised you when you left.

Existence is little, with few advisors.
