ليس إلى العلم بي سبيل

ما لي إلى العلم بي دليلُ

I have no way to knowledge,

I have no guide to lead me there.

والله إني عجزت عني

فلا نبيُّ ولا رسولُ

By God, I confess my incapacity;

No prophet or messenger am I.

ولا العقولُ التي فرضتم

تدركُ أعيانها فقولوا

Nor are the minds which you suppose

Able to grasp their own essence, so tell me:

ما يصنع العالم الذي قد

قيلَ له اعلم وما يقول

What can the world do, when it is told

"Know!" yet knows not what to say?

إن كان في العجز عينُ علمي

به فقد هانتِ السبيل

If in my incapacity there lies true knowledge,

Then the path has been made smooth.

قد حِرتُ والله في وجودي

فإنه جودة الأثيل

By God, I am perplexed by my existence;

For it is the generosity of the noble.

إن قلت إن الظهورَ فيه

والحكم لي حارت العقول

If I say that manifestation is in it,

And that judgment belongs to me, minds are confused;

أو قلت إنَّ الظهور فينا

به فما لي بذا دليل

Or if I say that manifestation is in us through it,

I have no proof of that.

حرنا وحار الوجودُ فينا

فما لنا نحوه وصول

Both it and we in our existence are perplexed,

We have no way to attain it.

فما لنا بالإله علم

إلا الذي أثبت الخليل

We have no knowledge of the God

Except what the Friend established,

أعطاه علماً به جلياً

مراتب النورِ والقبول

Giving him clear knowledge of it,

The degrees of light and acceptance.

ثم نفى عنه ما رآه

ربّاً ببرهانه الأفول

Then he denied that he saw the Lord

With a proof that declines.

أثبته حجة على من

أشرك من قومه الجليل

He established Him as proof against those

Who associated partners with the Exalted Tribe.

فوحَّد العين لا تثنى

فالنسب الغرُّ ما تحيل

So he made the Essence One, not doubled;

The attribution of partner is absurd.

توحيدُه للذي تراه

من نسب كلها أصول

His declaring Unity for Him whom you see

As attributes, all of them roots.
