1. ما لقومي عن حديثي في عما

    ثم قالوا نحن فيكم علما

    My people turn from my discourse in blindness,

    Then said: "We surpass you in knowledge."

  2. صَدقوا في نصف ما قالوا وما

    صَدقوا في نصفه الثاني لِما

    They spoke true in half of what they said, not

    True in the other half, for

  3. يقتضيه حكمُ ما جئتُ به

    من علومٍ جهلتها الحكما

    What the judgement of what I brought

    Of sciences they knew not, though wise.

  4. عزَّ علمُ الذَّوقِ أنْ يدركه

    عالم جانبنا ما احترما

    The knowledge of taste is too proud to be grasped

    By a scholar who turned from us, never polite.

  5. ولهذا يخطىء الحكمَ الذي

    يطلبُ الحال إذا ما حكما

    And so the judge errs whom

    Events seek when he judges.

  6. تضحك الأزهار بالأرض إذا

    بكت الزهر التي فوق السما

    The flowers on earth laugh when

    The flower on high weeps.

  7. وكذا العلمُ الذي أظهره

    عندنا تضحكُ منه العُلما

    And so the knowledge I revealed

    Among us makes their knowledge laugh.

  8. عُلماء السَّوء لا كانوا ولا

    كانوا بالتقوى لديه كرما

    Evil scholars were they not, nor

    Were they with piety bound to generosity.

  9. إن شخصاً جهلَ الأمرِ الذي

    قلت في نظمي هذا في عما

    If someone was ignorant of the matter

    I said in this, my poem, in blindness,

  10. إنما الكيِّس مَن دانَ به

    نفسَه حين أراه القدما

    The sensible one is he who

    Humbled himself when I showed him the ancient.

  11. قدم الصدق الذي نعرفه

    كلُّ من يشهده محتكما

    The truth of sincerity we know

    All who witness it will submit.

  12. فترى الحقَّ كما أنزله

    في نزولٍ واستواء وعما

    You see the truth as He revealed it

    In revelation, level and blindness.

  13. وإذا كان وجودي عينه

    لم أزل في عين كوني عدم

    And if my existence was its essence

    I would not cease to be in my essence negation.

  14. أعلم الله الذي نحن به

    من أمور لوحه والقلما

    God knows what we are by it

    Of the matters of His tablet and pen.

  15. حين أجرى الحياة نهراً

    من بخارٍ فيه سماه دما

    When He made life a river

    Of vapor in which He called it blood.

  16. عجباً إني على صورته

    ولذا أصبح أمري مبهما

    Strangely, I am in His image

    And thus my matter remains ambiguous.

  17. فله التنزيه عن وصفي وقد

    جاء في القرآن علماً محكما

    To Him belongs transcendence from describing me, and

    He came in the Qur'an with established knowledge.

  18. هو في الأرض ِإله قادر

    ومعي في كلِّ وجه وسما

    He on earth is the Able God,

    And with me in every face and attribute.

  19. أمهلوا ما أهملوا إنهم

    عندنا والله قومٌ حكما

    Pardon what they pardoned, they

    Are with God, assuredly, a wise people.

  20. حين أبقونا وفي عقدهم

    أنهم فينا رؤوسٌ زُعما

    When they left us, and in their pact

    Claimed to be over us chiefs, supposedly,

  21. إنما نحن عبيدٌ كلنا

    عندنا وعندهم ليس كما

    We are only slaves, all of us,

    With us and with them it is not so.

  22. قلتُ فيهم إنهم قد زعموا

    أكذبَ الله الذي قد زعما

    I said of them that they claimed

    To belie God, who they claimed.

  23. في كتابِ الله إذ جاء به

    مُخبراً عنهم لهم مستفهما

    In God's book when it came with it

    Informing of them, questioning them.
