واحد العين الذي نعرفه

وكثير الحكم ما نجهلُه

The One of clear sight whom we know

Yet much wisdom remains unknown

عدّدت أحكامه آثاره

وهو العلمُ الذي يقبله

His rules enumerated, effects traced

Such knowledge as can be accepted

فإذا ما قلت هذا عملي

قال لا إني أنا أعمله

When I say this is my doing

He says no, it is I who do it

قلت أهلاً فلماذا قلتَ لي

أنت رهن بالذي تفعله

I greet him, why say that to me?

You are bound by what you have done

ثم تنفي الفعل عني وأنا

في جهادٍ في الذي أبذله

Then you deny me the act while I

Struggle in what I expend

ولقد أعلم قطعاً أنكم

أنت علاَّمٌ بما أجهله

And I know for certain that you

Are the Expert in what I don't know

الذي أجمله تجمله

والذي تجملُ ما أجمله

That which I make beautiful, you make it beautiful

And what you make beautiful, I make it beautiful

فإذا قبحتُ فعلاً لم أقل

أدباً إنك بي تعمله

So if I consider an act ugly, I don't say

You made me do it out of propriety

وإذا أحسنتُ فعلاً فأنا

بك ربي أدباً أوصله

And if I do a good act, then I

Through you, my Lord, extend it

وأنا الفاعل في هذا وذا

ظاهراً والكشف ما يقبله

And I am the doer in this and that

Outwardly, though unveiling doesn't allow it

أنا أسعى الدهر في تحصيل ما

عالم الأمر أرى يهمله

I spend my life obtaining what

The Knower of Command seems to neglect

وأنا من عالم الخلقِ وقد

حزته كشفاً وما أمهله

And I, from the world of creation, have

Analyzed it by unveiling, not neglecting it

فيراني في الذي أعلمه

إنه بي وبه أعجله

So He sees me in what I know

That it is through me and with it I hurry

فإذا أخلصه لي قلت لا

إنما منه لنا مجمله

But when I devote it to Him, I say no
