الهوى حيّرني

في الذي تعلمهْ

Love has perplexed me,

In that which you know.

فإذا قلت أنا

قال لا أعلمه

If I say it is I,

It says, "I do not know it."

وإذا قلت بلى

قال ذا أفهمه

And if I say no,

It says, "I understand it."

ما أنا غير الهوى

ولذا أحكمه

I am nothing but love

And thus I judge it.

والهوى يعرب ما

لم أزل أعجمه

And love expresses what

I have never been able to express.

ولنا من كل ما

قال لي محكمه

And we have, for all

That it has said firmly to me,

هكذا عرفني

سيدي محكمه

Thus it has let me know -

My firm master.

فبه أظهره

وله أكتمه

Through it I reveal it,

And to it I conceal.

وأنا العبد الذي

قد هوت أنجمه

And I am the servant who -

Its stars have fallen upon me.

يطلب الأمر الذي

في الثرى معلمه

Seeking the matter which -

In the soil its landmark.

ولذا أعدل في

كلِّ ما أظلمه

And thus I am just in -

All that I oppress it.

عين ما أوضحه

عين ما أبهمه

The eye of what I clarify -

The eye of what I obscure.

فإذا أمدحه

فأنا أكلمه

So if I praise it -

Then I speak to it.

والذي ينقض لي

فأنا أبرمه

And that which contradicts me -

Then I resolve it.

ولذا يبصرني

أبداً أبرمه

And thus it sees me -

Always resolving it.
