والليلُ ليلُ الهوى والطبع إذ يغشى

ثم النهار نهارُ العقلِ والافشا

The night is the night of passion as it casts its veil,

Then day is the day of reason and elucidation.

إذا ذكرت ثيابا كنت لابسها

للدين ذكرني ذكرى بها الهرشا

When you recalled the clothes that you used to wear,

Religion reminded me of the memories that thrilled me.

ولستُ أعمى فإني ذو سنا وحجى

ولست أبصر لكني أنا الأعشى

I'm not blind, for I have wisdom and experience,

Yet I'm not seeing, for I am lost in love.

فالطبع يأنفُ أنْ يُفضى عليه به

والشرعُ يحكم أني أغرم الأرشا

My nature disdains to be reproached by it,

Yet religious law rules that I must pay damages.

فالحكم مني عليَّ لا على أحد

فلستُ أرجو سواي لا و لا أخشى

So my judgment of myself is not of anyone else-

I hope for no one's sake nor fear anyone.

فإنْ تجس ترى لينا وداخله

سمّ قتول كأني الحية الرقشا

If you feel my garment, you will find it smooth,

Yet inside it's like a serpent filled with venom.

هذا خصصتُ به وحدي وأعن به

نوع الأناسيِّ حال البدء والإنشا

I have particularized this for myself alone,

The kind of people at the start and culmination.

قامت على صورةِ الأسماء نشأتنا

فكلُّ ما نحن فيه ربنا أنشأ

Our existence was formed in the image of the Names-

So all we are in, our Lord brought into being.

وما اسرَّته في تبليغنا رسل

لأنَّ مرسلهم هو الذي أفشى

What the messengers intimated in conveying to us

Is because their Sender is He who elucidated.

ولو أسرَّ لكان الحلُ يشهد لي

بأنه هكذا سبحانه قد شا

If He had kept it secret, my inner wisdom would testify

That this is how-Glory to Him-He ordained.
