1. نمشّ بأعرافِ الجيادِ أكفنا

    لأنَّ لها جوداً على نشأةِ النفسِ

    With palms we gently lead the steeds along

    For they have virtues that enrich the soul

  2. لما جاء في الأنباء عن خيرِ مُرسَلٍ

    بأصدقِ قيل جاء من حضرةِ القدُسِ

    When news arrived of the best messenger

    In truth he came from the Holy Sanctum’s realm

  3. وضعفه النقادُ من أجلِ واحدٍ

    رواه عن الأثبات عن عالم الإنس

    Yet critics faulted him for just one thing

    Reported from proofs by the world of men

  4. وكم صحَّ من أمثاله فهو واحد

    من النوع إن شئتم وإلا من الجنس

    And how much that resembles him rings true

    Of his kind, if you will, or else his breed

  5. وما فيه إن أنصفتَ في القول مُثَبتٌ

    له عندنا ويل تحققُ من لبس

    Containing, if you judge fairly in speech, proof

    For us, lest confusion take root in understanding

  6. وكيف يكوتن اللبس والأمر ظاهرٌ

    يلوح لذي عينين من حَضرةِ الأنس

    How can confusion occur when all is clear

    To one with eyes in the gathering of intimacy

  7. لقد كان خيرُ الناسِ يفعل مثلَ ما

    بأعرافها والبيعُ بالثمنِ البخسِ

    The best of mankind used to act just like

    In its meadows, selling for the lowest price

  8. لقد صُغتُ معناه بأدنى عبارةٍ

    وألطفِها للعقلِ بالفكرِ والحسِّ

    Its meaning has been composed in modest expression

    And gentlest for the mind in thought and sense
