ما رأينا من عنايته

يأخذ الأموالَ والولدا

What we have seen of His care,

Taking wealth and children away,

غير ربٍّ لم يزل أبدا

بكمالِ الوصفِ مُنفردا

Except a Lord who never ceases

To be uniquely perfect in description.

أبصرَ المغرورُ جنته

ثم لم يدرِ الذي شهدا

The deceived one saw his paradise,

Then did not know what he witnessed.

قال ما أظن في خَلَدي

أن تبيد هذه أبدّا

He said, “I do not think that in my eternity,

This will ever perish.”

لم تكن كما تخيله

أنها تبقى له أمدا

It was not as he imagined,

That it would remain for him forever.

وهي عند الله باقية

للذي قد كان معتقدا

Yet with God it remains

For the one who had believed.

فأراه الظن خيبته

وأرى العلمَ الذي انتفدا

So fancy showed him his disappointment,

And knowledge showed what was inferred.

فأراه ما توعَّده

وأراه ما به وعَدا

So He showed him what He had promised him,

And showed him what He had warned.

لم يزل في قدسِ جنته

طالع العلى منتقدا

He did not cease to be in the holiness of his paradise,

Beholding the Most High, finding fault.

حامداً لله خالِقه

حيثُ لم يترك له سَندا

Praising God, his Creator,

Where He did not leave a supporter for him.

كلُّ من طابت سريتُه

بالذي في سرِّه اتحدا

Everyone whose inner state was good,

With the One whom in his inner self he became united.

لم يجد من دون خالقه

أحدا يكون ملتحدا

He did not find, apart from his Creator,

Anyone to be united with.

إنَّ لي مولى اسرُّ به

ما يرى شيئاً يكون سدى

Indeed I have a Master whom I confide in,

He does not see anything that comes to pass in vain.

عينُ كونِ الشيء حكمتُه

ما لها حكمٌ عليه بدا

The essence of a thing coming into being is His wisdom,

It has no judgment over Him ever.

الذي تُرجى عوارفه

كان لي رُكنا ومستندا

The One whose mystical knowledge is hoped for

Was for me a pillar and support.

عز لم يعرف وما عرفوا

غير من أضلهم بهدى

Mighty, He did not know, and they did not know,

Other than the One who led them with guidance.

فهو المعلوم عندهمُ

والذي لا يعلمن أبدا

So He is the Known to them,

And the One whom they will never know.
