إِذا ما اِلتَقَينا لِلوَداعِ حَسِبتَنا
لَدى الضَمِّ وَالتَعنيقِ حَرفاً مُشَدَّدا
When we meet to bid farewell, we seem
In our embraces and clinging, one letter doubled
فَنَحنُ وَإِن كُنّا مُثَنّى شَخوصُنا
فَما تَنظُرُ الأَبصارُ إِلّا مُوَحَّدا
Though we are two persons, our forms
Appear to all eyes as but one
وَما ذاكَ إِلّا مِن نُحولي وَنورُهُ
فَلَولا أَنيني ما رَأَت لِيَ مَشهَدا
That is but my leanness, and his light
If it were not for my sighs, no one would have seen us together
