1. نظرتُ إلى عينِ الوجودِ فلم أر

    قديماً ولكني رأيتُ حديثا

    I looked into the eye of existence, but did not see

    The ancient, rather I saw the new

  2. أظنّ الذي قد كان بيني وبينه

    بياناً يسمى للحجابِ كلوثا

    I think what was between it and me

    Was a veil called uncleanliness

  3. فشبهتُ نفسي في طلاب حقيقتي

    بليلٍ أتى يبغي النهارَ حثيثا

    So I likened myself in seeking my truth

    To a night that came hastily seeking the day

  4. ليأخذ منه تارة فيردُّه

    إلى الغيبِ حتى لا يرى مبثوثاً

    To take from it sometimes and return it

    To the unseen, so it would not be seen scattered

  5. وهل يعدمُ العلاتِ إلا قديمها

    ولكن نراه في العيانِ حدوثا

    Does anything lack defects except the eternal?

    Yet we see it in existence as new

  6. فمدَّ بنا حبلاً من العلوِّ نازلاً

    ولم يك في نعتِ الحبالِ رثيثا

    So it extended to us a rope from the most high descending

    And it was not among rope’s attributes wretchedness

  7. له قوّةٌ تغشى النعاسَ عيوننا

    لها ألسنٌ فينا وكم وكميثا

    It has a strength that covers the sleep of our eyes

    It has tongues within us, how abundant and fine

  8. ويعطى قليلاً من وجودي لأنني

    قليلٌ ويعطينا الوجودَ أثيثا

    And gives me little of my existence, because I

    Am little, and gives us existence generously

  9. اُضاحِكُ في يوم السرورِ كرائماً

    وأقبلُ في اليومِ العبوسِ ليوثا

    I laugh on the day of joy, blessings

    And kiss on the gloomy day fiercely

  10. سمعنا حديثاً بالرصافة طيِّباً

    وعند مسيئي لو سمع خبيثا

    We heard a good talk in Rusafa

    And if the wicked heard, it would be malice
