رأيت ذكوراً في إناث سواحر

ترآأين لي ما بين سلع وحاجرِ

I saw males in the form of sorceress females

Who appeared before me between merchandise and walls

فخاطبتُ ذكرانا لأني رأيتهم

رجالاً بكشفِ صادقٍ متواترِ

So I addressed the males because I saw them

As honest men of frequent good counsel

وكنَّ إناثاً قد حملن حقائقاً

من الروح القاءً لسورة غافر

Yet they were females bearing truths

Cast by the soul reciting the Forgiving Sura

وبعلهمُ الروحُ الذي قد ذكرته

وإنهمُ ما بين ناهٍ وآمر

And their husband was the soul I mentioned

Though they are between soft and firm

هم العارفون الصمُّ ردماً ولا تقل

بأنَّ الذي قد جاء ليس بخابر

They are the silent knowers, never say

That what has come is not well-informed

وما خص نوعاً دون نوع لأنه

رأى الأمر يسري في صغير وكابر

And did not specify one kind over another

For he saw the matter flow in small and old

ولا تمترِ فيما أقول فإنني

وقفت على علمٍ من البحرِ زاخر

Do not doubt what I say, for I

Stood upon abundant knowledge from the sea

تحسيته ماءً فُراتاً وإنه

لمِلحٌ أجاجٌ في السنين المواطرِ

I sensed it a gushing Euphrates, though

It is bitter salt in the pouring years

فمن كان ذا فكر تراه محيَّراً

ومَن كان ذا شرعٍ فليس بحائر

So one of intellect you'll see confused

While one of law is not lost

تمنيت أن أحظى برؤيةِ مؤمنٍ

صَدوقٍ من الفتيانِ ليس بكافرِ

I wished to gain sight of a faithful youth

Truthful from the lads, no unbeliever

وذاك الذي يأتي بصورة تاجر

ملي ّمن الأرباحِ ليس بخاسر

That one who comes in the form of a merchant

Full of profits, no loser

فلم أر إلا خالعاً ثوبَ ماجنٍ

ولم أر لابساً زيّ شاطر

But I saw only one who stripped the garb of a libertine

And saw no one wearing a clever costume

تنوَّعت الأشياء والأمر واحد

وما غائبٌ في الأخذ عنه كحاضر

Things and matters diversified yet one

And absent in acquisition like the present

إذا صحَّ غيبُ الغيبِ ما لأمر حاضر

يشاهده قلبي وعقلي وناظري

If the unseen of the unseen is true the matter of the present

My heart, mind and sight behold it
