خليلي لا تعجلا واكتما

حديثي حذاراً على مهجتي

My friend, do not rush and keep

my words secret with caution in your heart

فإني اتحدتُ بمن قام لي

إذا ما توجهتُ في قبلتي

For I have fallen for one who stands for me

Whenever I turn towards my prayers

ففي كلِّ شيء له صورة

إذا ما بدتْ فلها وجهتي

For in everything there is an image

If it appears, it has my attention

وذاك الذي كنتُ أملته

فما كان بعضي سوى جملتي

And that one whom I wished for

Was but a part of my whole

تملكني وتملكته

فلي عزه وله ذلتي

He owns me and I own him

So he has my humility and I have his glory

وإن أنت تعكس ما قلته

يصح فجمعي في وحدتي

And if you portray what I have said differently

It fits, for my gathering is in oneness

وفي حال حبي أنا كاره

له ولحبي فيا حيرتي

And in the state of my love I hate

him and my love, oh my confusion

أتاني ليلة على غفلة

فثبت إتيانه حجتي

He came to me suddenly in the night

So his coming affirmed my argument

لو أنَّ الذي همت فيه هوى

يكون على ديني أو ملتي

If only the one I was infatuated with was

Of my faith or my doctrine

لما كنت أشكو الجوى والنوى

ولكنه ليس من عترتي

I would not complain of passion and desire

But he is not of my lineage

يخالفني ووفاقي له

لذاك توقفت في وقفتي

He differs from me, yet I agree with him

Thus I paused in my stance

هويت السمان ومن لي بهم

وحبي لعينهمُ نحلتي

I craved the heavens, but who do I have there?

My love for their eyes was my reward

وما سمن القوم إلا الذي

يبلغني منهمُ منيتي

And none of the people fattened but those

Who brought me my wishes from them

يقيني بهم مُشحمٌ ملحمٌ

يقيني من الأخذ في عثرتي

My certainty in them is confident and steadfast

My certainty saves me from stumbling into mistakes
