عجبتُ من بحرٍ بلا ساحل

وساحلٍ ليسَ له بحرُ

I am perplexed by a sea with no shore,

And a shore with no sea.

وضحوةٍ ليس لها ظُلمة

وليلةٍ ليس لها فجرُ

A forenoon with no darkness,

And a night with no dawn.

وكرةٍ ليس لها موضع

يعرفها الجاهلُ والحبر

A planet with no place,

Known by the unlettered and the scholar.

وقبةٍ خضراءَ منصوبةٍ

جاريةٍ نقطتُها القهرُ

A green dome erected

With destiny etched on it.

وعَمَدٍ ليس لها قُبةٌ

ولا مكان خفي السر

Pillars with no dome,

And no hidden place.

خطبت سراً لم بغيره كن

فقيل هل هيمك الفِكرُ

I proposed in secret to one unlike any other,

And was told, "Will thought drive you mad?"

فقلتُ ما لي قدرةٌ فارفقوا

عليه في الكونِ ولا صبر

I said, "I have no power, so be gentle,

In this universe, I have no patience."

فإنَّ بالفكر إذا ما استوى

في خلدي يتَّقدُ الجمر

For when thought is balanced

In my mind, embers ignite.

فيصبح الكلُّ حريقاً فلا

شفعٌ يُرى فيه ولا وِتر

And everything becomes an inferno, so there is no

Intercessor to be seen, nor any covenant.

فقيل لي ما يجتني زَهره

من قال رفقاً إنني حرّ

I was told, "What is not made fragrant by its flower,

Say gently, 'I am free.'"

منخطب الخنساءَ في خِدرهها

مُتيماً لم يغله المهر

I sought to marry al-Khansa' in her bridal tent,

Alone, not bound by dowry.

أعطيتها المهر وأنكحتها

في ليلتي حتى بدا الفجر

I gave her the dowry and married her

Throughout my night until dawn broke.

فلم أجد غيري فمن ذا الذي

أنكحته فلينظر الأمر

But I found no other but myself, so who

Did I marry? Let the matter be examined.

فالشمسُ قد أدرج في ضوئها

القمرُ الساطعُ والزهرُ

For the brilliant moon and the flowers

Are veiled in the light of the sun,

كالدَّهرِ مذمومٌ وقد قال من

صلى عليه ربُك الدهر

Like time, blamed yet the Prophet

Whom your Lord blessed, blamed time.
