كل من رام في الوجودِ اتصالا

بوجودي قد رام أمراً مُحالا

All who wish in existence to connect

With my existence have wished the impossible

قد قطعنا لرؤيةِ السرِّ شوقا

واشتياقا فيافياً ورِمالا

We traversed longing and yearning

To see the secret, long roads and sands

ثم إني لما وصلتُ إليه

لم أجد غيرنا فزدت نكالا

Then when I reached Him

I found none but us, so I suffered more

قلت ربي فقال لبيك عبدي

لم أجد غير حيرةٍ لي ضلالا

I said "My Lord" and He replied "Here I am, My servant"

I found only confusion leading me astray

قال لي هكذا هو الأمر فاعلم

لم يزد طالبوه إلا خبالا

He said to me "This is how it is, so know

The seekers of Him only gained delusion"

كلُّ قلبٍ يبغي الوصول إليه

معلم بالفراقِ منه تعالى

Every heart that seeks to reach Him

Is taught by parting from the Exalted

وكذا من يقول ربي بقلبي

جدٌّ والجدُّ لم ينله فنالا

And likewise whoever says "My Lord" in their heart

Is truthful, and the truthful gained nothing

حيرةٌ مثله فقال شخيصٌ

غاطسٌ في السرابِ ماءً زلالا

A confusion like His, so a passionate one said

Plunging into a mirage seeking fresh water

ثم لما أتاه لم يلفَ إلا

عُدماً حاصلا وقد كان آلا

Then when he came to Him he found

Nothingness fulfilled, and it had been empty

يثبتُ الجهلَ ههنا ثم أيضا

ههنا والجهولُ نال الوبالا

Ignorance is proven here, and also

He found God with him, so it sufficed

وجد الله عنده فكفاه

صاحبُ الآلِ كان أحسن آلا

The Companion of the Family was best prepared

My brothers, have you seen or heard

إخوتي هل رأيتهمُ أو سمعتم

أن شخصاً أتى إليه فمالا

That someone came to Him and inclined

Away from Him, from the unfulfilled

عنه عن غير حاصل مستلذ

لا وحقَّ الإله جلَّ جلالا

No, by the right of God, His majesty exalted

We did not see Him in other than the essence of Truth

ما رأيناه في سوى الحق عينا

وقصاراه أنْ يكون خيالا

And deemed it only to be imaginary

He is the ordained, understood path

وهو شرع مقرَّر مستفادٌ

جاء بالكاف نوره يتلالا

His light came veiled in the letter Kaf

To hearts that drew near Him in yearning

لقلوبٍ دنت إليه اشتياقا

فكساها مهابةً وجمالا

So He clothed them in awe and beauty

No, by the right of passion and its pursuers

لا وحقِّ الهوى ومتبعيه

ما رأينا في الهجر إلا الوصالا

We did not see in separation other than union

No desiring seeker attained

لم ينل كلُّ طالبٍ مستفيدٍ

عينَ كونِ الحبيبِ إلا كَلالا

The essence of the Beloved's existence but thorns

So seek the matter through existence, you will find it

فاطلب الأمر بالوجودِ تجدّه

عند حبلِ الوريد يشكو المطالا

At the vein of the wrist complaining of trials

I said "Since you are here," He said "My lifetime

قلت مذ أنت ههنا قال دهري

إنَّ ربي أتيت عنه مثالا

Is that I came from my Lord as an example

And I want only my God

وأنا ما أريد غلا إلهي

حبه الدهر لا أريد اتصالا

I do not wish to connect with other than God," He said

"The essence of my existence, O youth, is independence

بسوى الله قال عينُ وجودي

حققِ الأمر يا فتى استقلالا

He who saw the full moon in us knows for certain

That it was the crescent in vision"

يدري قطعاً من أبصر البدر فينا

إنه كان في العيان هلالا

Then as the matter increased in us

It returned diminishing, seeking perfection

ثم لما تزايد الأمر فينا

عاد في نقصه يريد الكمالا

Every imperfection you see is perfection

For the one in whom the example came that

كلُّ نقصٍ تراه فهو كمال

للذي جاء فيه أنَّ المثالا

The thing hides behind it, and it is unveiling

To one who knows the lawful as lawful

يستر الشيء خلفه وهو كشفٌ

عند من يعرفُ الحلال حلالا

The ruling of knowledge is that what was stoning

It was aflame in the air

حكم العلمُ أنَّ ما كان رجماً

إنه كان في الهواء اشتعالا

It is a star as you see, but

The atmosphere made room for the stoning

وهو نجم كما تراه ولكن

جعلَ الجوّ للرجوم مجالا

It is fire, and in reality it is light

In it is occupation for one who wishes to be occupied

هو نار وفي الحقيقةِ نورٌ

فيه شغلٌ لمن يريد اشتغالا

And the Lord came to the heat within it

Mercy for the creation, so it cast shadows

وأتى الربُّ للحرارةِ فيها

رحمة للورى فمدّ الظلالا

We enjoyed it, so we lived like kings

We do not seek conflict, so we do not seek fighting

فنعمنا بها فعشنا ملوكا

ليس نبغي ضدّاً فنبغي قتالا

In bliss through it, and cool shade

Rested, not tasting decay

في نعيم به وظل ظليل

مستريحين لا نقط ذبالا

If you wish to be a dwelling within it

Fast more here, and draw near

إن ترد أنْ تكون فيه مكانا

أكثر الصوم ههنا والوصالا

All who leaned away from you in what you see

Do not say of them that they leaned from you

كلُّ من مال عنك فيما تراه

لا تقل عنه إنه عنك مالا

Lest you provoke the enemy in word and deed

And please the loyal one in deed and state

فتغيظ العدوّ قولا وفعلا

وتسرّ الوليّ فعلا وحالا

Attachment was named for leaning

Toward you, and the servant leaned away distracted

سمى المال في العموم لميل

فيك والعبدُ مال عنه ممالا
