1. يا بدرُ بادر إلى المنادي

    كَفيتَ فاشكر ضُرّ الأعادي

    O full moon, hasten to the caller

    You have suffered enough, so give thanks for the harm of enemies

  2. قد جاءك النور فاقتبسه

    ولا تُعرِّج على السوادِ

    The light has come to you so take it

    And do not deviate into the darkness

  3. فمن أتاه النُّضارُ يوماً

    يزهد في الخط بالمدادِ

    For he who is given radiance one day

    Will despise writing with ink

  4. فقم بوصف الإله وانظر

    إليه فرداً على انفرادِ

    So describe God and look

    At Him alone in isolation

  5. وحصن السَّمع إذ تنادي

    وخلص القول إذ تنادى

    And guard your hearing when calling

    And purify your words when invoking

  6. والبس لمولاك ثوبَ فقرٍ

    كي تحظى بالواهب الجوادِ

    And wear for your Master a dress of poverty

    So you may gain favor with the Bountiful Giver

  7. وقل إذا جئته فقيراً

    يا سّيداً ودّه اعتمادي

    And say when you come to Him poor

    O Master, make me reliant on Your affection

  8. اسق شرابَ الوصال صباً

    ما زال يشكو صدى البعاد

    Quench me with the drink of union in the morning

    Still complaining of the echo of distance

  9. تاه زماناً بغير قوتٍ

    إذ لم يشاهد سوى العباد

    Lost for a time without sustenance

    When he saw none but servants

  10. فكن له القوتَ ما استمرت

    أيّامه الغرُّ باقتصادِ

    So be his sustenance as long as

    His days of estrangement last with moderation

  11. حتى يموت العذول صبراً

    وتنطفي جمرة البعادِ

    Until the unmarried die of patience

    And the embers of distance are extinguished

  12. ويعجب الناس من شخيصٍ

    يكون بعد الضلال هادي

    And people are amazed by a worthless man

    Who becomes a guide after misguidance

  13. من كان ميتاً فصار حياً

    فقد تعالى عن النفاد

    Who was dead and became alive

    Has transcended mortality

  14. ما خلع النعل غير موسى

    بشرطها عند بطن وادِ

    None took off his sandals but Moses

    At his condition by the valley’s edge

  15. من خلعتَ نعله تناهت

    رتبة أقواله السَّداد

    He whose sandals you took off

    His words attained supreme rectitude

  16. فإن تكن هاشميّ ورثٍ

    فاسلك بها منهج السَّداد

    So if you are a Hashimi heir

    Then follow the path of rectitude

  17. والبس نعاليك إن من لم

    يلبس نعاليه في وهادِ

    And wear your sandals, for he who

    Did not wear his in the valley

  18. فهل يساوي المحيط حالاً

    من لم ير العينَ في الرمادِ

    Can the ocean now equal

    One who did not see the eye in the ashes?

  19. فميز الحال إذ تراه

    في مركب القدس في الغوادي

    So distinguish the state when you see

    Him in the ship of holiness in the valleys

  20. ورتب العلم إذ يناجي

    سرك بالسرِّ في الهوادي

    And arrange knowledge when He confides

    His secret to you in the valleys

  21. وارقبه في وهم كل سرٍّ

    في ساتر إن أتى وبادي

    And watch over Him in the fancy of every mystery

    In a screen if He comes unveiled

  22. ولا تشتِّت ولا تفرِّق

    عبديه من حاضر وبادي

    Do not scatter and divide

    His servants, both present and absent

  23. فإن وهبتَ الرجوع فرِّق

    بين الحواضر والبوادي

    For if you are granted return, part

    The present from the absent

  24. واحذر بأنْ تركب المهارى

    إذ تقرن العير بالجواد

    And beware of riding thoroughbreds

    When pairing the camel with the steed

  25. لا يحجبنك الشخوصُ واصبر

    على مَهماته الشدادِ

    Let no individuals veil you, and be patient

    With His severe tribulations

  26. وانظر إلى واهبِ المعاني

    وقارنِ العينَ بالفؤاد

    And look to the Giver of meanings

    And pair the eye with the heart

  27. وأسند الأمر في التلقي

    له تكن صاحبَ استناد

    And refer the matter in receiving

    To Him, be one who depends on Him

  28. و لايغرّنك قولُ عبدي

    فالحقُّ في الجمعِ لا ينادي

    And let not the word of My servant deceive you

    For the truth in gathering does not call out

  29. وإنّ هذا المقام أخفى

    من عدم المثلِ للجوادِ

    And this station is more hidden

    Than the absence of an equal to the Generous

  30. فكنه علماً وكنه حالاً

    مع رائح إن أتى و غادي

    Know Him as knowledge and know Him as a state

    With spices if He comes and goes

  31. وكنه نعتاً و لا تكنه

    ذاتاً فعين المحال بادي

    And know Him as attributes but do not know Him

    As an essence, for the eye of the absurd is evident

  32. ولا تكن ذا هوى وحب

    فيه فقلب المحب صادي

    And be not one of desire and love

    For the lover's heart is prone to pain

  33. من بات ذا لوعةٍ محباً

    شكا له حرقةَ الجواد

    Who spends the night burning with yearning

    Will complain to Him of the agony of passion

  34. وانظر بعينِ الفراق أيضاً

    فيه ترى حكمةَ العِناد

    And look with the eye of separation as well

    At Him, you will see the wisdom of obstinacy

  35. وحكمةُ الحزمِ والتواني

    وحكمة السِّلم والجِلاد

    And the wisdom of resolve and delay

    And the wisdom of peace and war

  36. فحكمةُ الصدِّ لا يراها

    سوى حكيم لها وسادي

    For only the wise director perceives

    The wisdom of rejection

  37. وانظر إلى ضاربٍ بعود

    صفاة يبس فانساب وادي

    And look upon one striking pieces of wood

    Of ebony that flowed as a valley

  38. واعجبْ له واتخذه حالاً

    تجده كالنارِ في الزناد

    And marvel at Him and take Him as a state

    You will find Him like fire in the tinder

  39. فالماءُ للروحِ قوتُ علم

    والجسم للنار كالمزاد

    For water is the sustenance of the soul

    And the body is to fire as the wick

  40. فإن مضى الماء لم تجده

    بدارِ دنياك في المعاد

    If the water is gone, you will not find it

    In the abode of your world at the return

  41. وإن خَبت ناره عشاءً

    فسوّ من مات في المهاد

    And if His fire wanes at night

    Make peace with one who died in bed

  42. أوضحتُ سرّاً إن كنتُ حرّاً

    كنتُ به واري الزناد

    I have clarified a secret if I were free

    I would conceal it in the tinder

  43. من علم الحقَّ علمَ ذَوقٍ

    لم يُقرن الغيّ بالرشاد

    Whoever knows the truth, knows the taste

    Did not pair heresy with guidance

  44. فمن أتاه الحبيبُ كشفاً

    لم يدر ما لذة الرقاد

    So when the Beloved discloses Himself to him

    He knows not the bliss of slumber

  45. مثل رسول الإله إذ لم

    يسكن له النومُ في فؤاد

    Like the Messenger of God, when

    Sleep did not reside in his heart

  46. لو بلغَ الزرعُ منتهاه

    اشتغل القومُ بالحصاد

    If the crops reached their end

    The people would be busy with the harvest

  47. أو نازلَ الحصنَ قومُ حربٍ

    لبادر الناسُ للجِهادِ

    Or if an army of war descended upon the fortress

    The people would rush to holy war

  48. ناشدتك الله يا خليلي

    هل فُرش الخزِّ كالقتاد

    I adjure you by God, O my friend

    Is the fur bedding spread out like the quilt?

  49. لا والذي أمرنا إليه

    ما عنده الخير كالفساد

    No, by Him who commanded us to Him

    The good with Him is not like evil
