إنَّ هذا لهو السحر الحلال

أين أنتم أين أنتم يا رجالْ

This is indeed lawful magic

Where are you, where are you O men

اشربوه لبناً من ضرعنا

شربَ صادٍ وجد الماءَ الزُّلالْ

Drink it as milk from our udder

The one who drank found clear water

يشبه المعجز في معدنه

يا لثاراتٍ لأمر لا يُنالْ

It resembles a miracle in its source

Oh for a matter that cannot be attained

باكتساب أنه من قول مَنْ

قال بالإسكان في عين المحالْ

By acquiring that it is from the words of Him

Who said with stillness in the eye of the impossible

هو ظل للذي تعرفه

ولهذا حكمه حكم الظلال

It is the shadow of the One you know

And so its ruling is the ruling of shadows

ما كمالُ الشخصِ إلا ظله

إنْ بالظلِّ له عينُ الكمال

The perfection of a person is only his shadow

For in the shadow his eye of perfection lies

ولهذا مدَّه الله لنا

فنراه عندنا ضربَ مِثال

And so Allah extended it to us

That we see it, setting an example

يتعالى الله عن إدراكنا

وكذا نحن جلال في جمال

Allah is exalted above our comprehension

And so are we, majesty in beauty

إننما العلم به العلمُ بنا

فلذا نجهله في كل حال

Our knowledge of Him is but our knowledge of ourselves

And so we are ignorant of Him in every state

في رجوعِ الظلِّ علمٌ واضحٌ

حكمة الظلِّ ترى عند الزوال

In the return of the shadow there is clear knowledge
