1. علا كلُّ سلطانٍ على كلِّ سوقة

    إذا سكن الأطوالَ وأسكن العرضا

    Authority lies over every marketplace

    When lengths are quieted and widths are settled

  2. وما ذاك إلا ههنا بتكلُّفٍ

    وينعدمُ التكليفُ إن فارق الأرضا

    Yet that is only accomplished with effort here

    And effort ceases when one leaves the earth

  3. إلى جنةِ المأوى بنشأة حسِّه

    وما عندها ظل وإنْ لها عرضا

    To the Garden of Refuge with awakened senses

    Where there is no shade though it has breadth

  4. تظن ترى ناساً وما هم كما ترى

    وما لهمُ غير اليرابيع من مثل

    You may think you see people yet they are not as you see

    For they have nothing like hands or feet

  5. قلوبهمُ كالنافقاء لحكمةِ

    وإن فارقوا اليربوع في الخَلقِ والشكل

    Their hearts are like the hypocrites by decree’s wisdom

    Though they differ from hands and feet in form and shape

  6. لأن لهم وجهين في أصل خلقهم

    فوجهٌ إلى فصلٍ ووجهٌ إلى وصل

    For they have two faces in their essence

    One facing separation, one facing union

  7. وهذا مديحٌ منبيءٌ بحقيقةٍ

    وما هو هجوٌ جَلَّ عن هجومهم مثلي

    And this is praise stemming from truth

    Far above reproaching them is my like

  8. وما أنا عما قد ذكرتُ بغائبٍ

    ولكنَّ ذا الأفضال يمتاز بالفضل

    I am not absent from what I have mentioned

    But the virtuous are distinct in merit

  9. وما قلت إلا ما تحققت كونه

    فإنَّ مثال الشخصِ يظهر بالظل

    I have only said what is verified to be

    For the image of a person appears in shade

  10. وقد علم الأقوام أني بصورةٍ

    حبيت بها جود اختصاص على الكلِّ

    And people knew I love in my form

    The excellence of particular grace over all

  11. فيا نفس جودي بالسماح على فتى

    قد أنزلكم بالفقر منزلةَ الأصل

    So my soul, be generous to a lad

    Whom you have placed in poverty's position

  12. فإن لم يكن أهلاً فإنك أهلة

    وما هو بالإتيان إلا من الأهل

    If he is not worthy, you are worthy

    And he cannot come but from the worthy

  13. وما ثَم ذات تستحق لعينها

    وجود مديح أو هجاء بلا فعل

    No being deserves for its own sake

    The existence of praise or blame without action
