May your truth grant respite,
To my complaining heart,
For beauty has enslaved me,
As my life and demise.
It has enthralled me with monks,
Priests and ascetics,
And I frequented not churches,
Had it not been for you.
And here I am in agony because of you,
With no relief from your torment,
Nor can I find solace,
For you have shackled me.
How I cry blood for you,
Yet you don’t mourn the weeping one.
Do you know what your eyes rule,
Over my eyes because of you?
And what fire it ignites,
In my heart with your blazing light?
You veiled your radiance from my sight,
Though above the sun is your mark.
In the pliant branch, and in the soft,
Flexible palm tree is your charm.
And by the meadow are your cheeks,
Whoever saw them saw your grace.
Nuwayrah, though you are scarce,
Still I love you, I love you!
And your eyes that foretell,
That I am doomed by your love.
