1. خَرَجت مِن بَعض ضُروب البَصره

    في رفقة مِن عامر للعمره

    I went out from Basra

    With a group of pilgrims heading to Mecca

  2. حَتّى إِذا كُنا عَلى رَمل الحمى

    وَقَد خَبطنا جَوف لَيل مظلما

    Until we reached the sands of Al-Hima

    Having travelled in a very dark night

  3. في لَيلة باردة مطيره

    رِياحها شَديدة كَثيرة

    On a cold and rainy night

    With strong blowing winds

  4. قالَ أَصيحابي اِنزلوا فعرسوا

    فَاللَّيل داج وَالرِّفاق نعسوا

    My companions said: Let's camp and rest

    For the night is dark and friends are sleepy

  5. فَعرس القَوم بِواد ذي شَجر

    وَلَم أَزَل أربؤهم إِلى السحر

    So the group camped in a valley with trees

    While I stayed awake watching over them until dawn

  6. في لَيلة ذات رِياح وَمَطر

    لا نجم في سَمائِها وَلا قمر

    On a windy and rainy night

    With no stars or moon in the sky

  7. حَتّى إِذا الفَجر بَدا للناظر

    وَحانَ حينَ رحلة المُسافر

    Until dawn broke for the onlooker

    And it was time for the traveller to move on

  8. هَب أَصيحابي مِن الرّقاد

    إِلى ظُهور الإبل وَالجِياد

    My companions woke up from their sleep

    And headed to their camels and horses

  9. وَثوروا وَانطلقوا خلست

    وَقُلت لا ضير إِذا احتبسَت

    They rose, set out hastily and left

    And I said no harm if I'm delayed

  10. فَظلت في أَصل كناس للحمر

    وَقَد سكرت بِاللغوب وَالسهر

    So I remained under the trunk of a palm tree

    Having indulged in drinking and staying up late

  11. فَنمت للحين جَميع يَومي

    ثَم اِنتَبَهت فَرقاً مِن نَومي

    And slept the whole next day

    Then I awoke in panic from my nap

  12. فَقُمت مَرعوباً مَع الأَصيل

    جوعان عَطشان بِلا دَليل

    Hungry, thirsty with no guide

    The night grew dark and I was more lost

  13. اعتكر اللَّيل وَزادت حيرَتي

    في جنحِهِ وَجوعَتي وَخيفَتي

    Feeling scared, hungry and afraid

    And I found no better option than

  14. وَلَم أَجد في الحَزم غَير المَكث

    في مَوضِعي خَوف التوى وَاللبث

    To stay put fearing danger and harm

    I said: If I walk without a guide

  15. وَقُلت إِن سرت بِغَير هادي

    ضَللت في أضواج هَذا الوادي

    I would get lost in the valley's winding paths

    And feared its beasts and jinn

  16. وَخِفت مِن سِباعه وَجنه

    وَلَم أَبل مِن سَهلِهِ وَحُزنِهِ

    Without knowing the plains from the dunes

    Then I remained still in my place

  17. ثَم هَجَمت في مَكاني جاثِماً

    وَكُنتُ في ذاكَ الهُجوم حازِما

    And I was firm in that decision

    While I kept looking around

  18. وَلَم أزَل انظُر في النَواحي

    وَأرهب الجَرس مِن الرِّياح

    And the blowing winds terrified me

    Until a figure appeared and I stared

  19. حَتَّى بَدا شَخص فَحدقت النَّظَر

    وَلَم أَكد أثبتهُ مِن الحَذَر

    Barely able to discern it clearly

    Then I saw an old man

  20. ثُم بَدا لي فَرَأيت رَجُلاً

    شَيخاً يُناجي صاحِباً مكتهلا

    Arguing with another angry man

    They increased their dispute and debate

  21. قَد أَكثَرا الخِصام وَالجِدالا

    وَأَعلَنا الشِّجار وَالمَقالا

    Quarrelling and arguing

    Boasting and frequent boastings

  22. وَافتخرا وَكَثرة المُفاخرة

    تَدعو إِلى العِناد وَالمُشاجرة

    That called for stubbornness and fight

    The old man said: My Indian people

  23. فَكانَ قَول الشَّيخ قومي الهند

    الحُكماء العُلماء اللد

    Are wise scholars and learned minds

    Having much knowledge, wisdom and wit

  24. لَهم علوم وَحلوم وَفطن

    وَحكمة بالغة إِذ تمتحن

    And profound wisdom when examined

    If not for the virtue they showed

  25. لَو لَم يَكُن من فضلِهم إِذ يختبر

    فَضل الرِّجال منصف وَيعتبر

    When the game of chess they invented

    Of great significance they called jest

  26. إِلا الَّذي أَبدوه في الشطرنج

    لِلناس مِن علم سَديد النهج

    That makes shallow opinions weighty

    In it are hints and lessons

  27. جد عَظيم لَقبوه هَزلا

    يَصير الرأي الأفين جزلا

    Benefiting every memorizing wise person

    They made it an ideal example

  28. فيهِ إِشارات إِلى مَواعِظِ

    نافِعة لِكُل واع حافِظ

    That the wise cite these parables

    To mean that living is through planning

  29. قَد رَسَموها لِلهُدى مِثالاً

    أَن الحَكيم يَضرب الأَمثالا

    Not destiny and fate

    And man is capable

  30. يَعنون أن العَيش في التَدبير

    وَلَيسَ بِالقسمة وَالتقدير

    Of protecting or losing himself

    And this is impartial justice

  31. وَالمَرء لِلأَفعال مُستَطيع

    مُحكم يحفَظ أَو يضيع

    If men were just and fair

    The Indian said this is my argument

  32. وَذَلِكَ العَدل بِلا خِلاف

    لَو وفق الرِّجال لِلإنصاف

    The way I built my case

    Our chess is made for this purpose

  33. قالَ لَه الكَهل وَقَومي الفرسُ

    الحُكماء ما بِذاكَ لَبس

    The first art of sciences we invented

    Its virtue is clear without doubt

  34. لَهُم سِياسات وَتَدبير حسن

    كَالشّرع عَدلاً في الفُروض وَالسنَن

    As daylight is clear to one with eyesight

    My proof in it is evident

  35. وَملكهم معتضد بِالحكمه

    كَأَنَّهُم قَد أيدوا بالعصمه

    And truth no skeptic can deny

    It's enough the example I cited

  36. لا نَعبد الأَصنام وَالأَوثانا

    وَلا نَرى الظُلم وَلا العُدوانا

    That with my eyes I witnessed

    The fairest judge is the eyewitness

  37. وَالعَيش بِالرزق وَبِالتقدير

    وَلَيسَ بِالرَأي وَلا التدبير

    No proof above what he sees firsthand

    Prince Muzaffar whom God graced

  38. وَقَد وضَعنا النرد لِلمثال

    لَو فطنت بَصائر الرِّجال

    With his virtuous and successful self

    Reached glory ruling his kingdom

  39. وَما قَصدنا بِالفصوص اللعبا

    حاشا لَنا لَكن قَصَدنا الأَدَبا

    Until things fell properly into place

    With no other thing helping him

  40. وَإِنَّما سمى لعباً حيله

    تَخفى بِهِ ما فيهِ مِن فَضيلَه

    Rather everything in this world opposing him

    Time, fate and men

  41. وَإِنَّما يَعشقه الرِّجال

    لأَنَّهُ لَعب كَما يُقال

    While through wisdom's gentle touch he suffers

    Through his effort, grace and toil

  42. وَلَو دَروا أَن المُراد الأَدَبُ

    بِوضعِهِ وَصُنعِهِ ما لَعبوا

    And his skill in his tricks not his troops

    So it became clear that command is impossible

  43. فَالحَق قَد تعلمه ثَقيل

    يأباه إِلا نَفَر قَليل

    What I mentioned is enough evidence

    First symbol is recognizing status

  44. وَأَنما أَخفيت المَصالح

    وَموه القَول الشَّفيق الناصح

    For that is assured with them

    A good person never plays

  45. وَدَلَستُ بِظاهر اللذات

    كَم راحة تَكمن في أَذاة

    With an ignorant foolish opponent

    Likewise a strong man should never

  46. كَمثلما رَكبت الأَلحان

    وَوضعت للحكمة العيدانُ

    Fight a weak enemy if he is wise

    For whoever fights one beyond his might

  47. يَظنها الجاهل لَهواً وَلَعب

    وَلَو دَرى بِوضعِها ماذا طُلب

    His own fight will bring his demise

    And one should only fight

  48. مِن راحة الروح وَبَسط النفس

    وَهزها لطبعها بِالأنس

    His peers and equals

    A man should never fight a Sultan

  49. لَم يَستَمع قط الغناء وَنَفر

    عَنهُ لان الحَق ما فيهِ وَطر

    For that is the biggest ruin

    And in its symbols, if one contemplates

  50. قالَ لَهُ الهندي هَذي حجَتي

    سَلَكت فيما جئته مَحجتي

    And reflects upon its deeper meaning:

    O Man! be in this life

  51. شَطرنجنا لمثل هَذا وَضعا

    أَول فَن في العُلوم اِخترعا

    Like a chess player avoiding danger and loss

    Cautious of your enemy, defensive

  52. وَفَضله باد بِغَير مين

    ما أَوضَح الصُّبح لذي عَينين

    Saving yourself from his harm and deceit

    For now is the time of suffering and trial

  53. وَإِن بُرهاني فيه ظاهِر

    وَالحَق لا يَدفعه المكابِرُ

    And utmost prudence is to be careful

    Take hold of opportunities when chances come

  54. يَكفيك مِن شاهد ما ذكرته

    أَمر بِعَيني هَذهِ نَظرته

    For if you miss them, they turn to afflictions

    And precede in attaining glory a precursor

  55. أعدل قاض قَلد العيانُ

    وَلَيسَ فَوقَ حُكمِهِ بُرهانُ

    Before your opponent gets there ahead of you

    Like the people of Damascus preceded

  56. إِن الأَمير المزيديَّ صدقه

    بِنَفسِهِ الفاضلة الموفقة

    The people of Iraq to the Euphrates water

    Until Iraqis remained perplexed

  57. نالَ العُلا وَساسَ أَمر ملكه

    حَتّى غَدا منتَظِماً في سلكه

    Wandering in the darkness of confusion

    And the King near a King is not safe

  58. وَلَيسَ شَيء غَيره يُساعده

    بَل كُل شَيء في الوَرى يُعانده

    For it is among the greatest ruin

    And we saw recently in our time

  59. الوَقت وَالقِران وَالرِّجال

    وَهوَ بِلُطفِ رَأيهِ يَحتال

    Sufficient witness of what we know

    When Toghrul Beg arrived

  60. بِجده وَلطفه وَكَده

    وَحذقه في كَيدِهِ لا جنده

    None could offer him protection

    So the Kind King welcomed him

  61. فبان أَن الأَمر بِالمحاله

    كَفى بِما ذَكَرتهُ دَلاله

    Saying: do not reject my treat

    And presented a chess set to play

  62. أَول رَمز في اِعتِبار الطَّبَقه

    لأَنَّها عِندَهُم محققه

    Hinting that he wants to fight

    But when midst the game ensued

  63. لا يَلعَبنَّ أَبَداً مَع مُحسن

    مجود فذاكَ فعل الأَرعن

    Ibn Mikal intentionally erred a strange act

    As he greeted his King with a check

  64. كَذاكَ لا تُحارب القويا

    مِن العَدو إِن تَكُن ذَكيا

    With finesse in his trick and clever ruse

    So Ibn Buwaih rebuffed bothered

  65. فَإِن من حارب من لا يَقوى

    بِحَربِهِ جَر عَلَيهِ البَلوى

    And Toghrul Beg increased in anger

    While the Kind King said: Al-Rahim erred

  66. وَحارب الأَكفاء وَالأَقرانا

    فَالمَرء لا يُحارب السلطانا

    Even a Sage could err at times

    It is not customary for a King

  67. وَإِن من رُموزِها لَو يعتبر

    لاعبها بِأَمرِها وَيَفتَكر

    To enter the abode of another King uninvited

    Why did you enter our quarters laughing?

  68. يا أَيُّها الإِنسان كُن في الدنيا

    كَلاعب الشطرنج وانحُ المَعنى

    Wrong, violating proper etiquette

    Then he gestured: Seize him! And so they did

  69. محترِزاً مِن العَدو مُحتَرس

    تَنج وَتَسلم مِن أَذاه وَتكس

    As he surrendered himself before him in defeat

    So be very cautious and pious

  70. فَالحين في الأَهوان وَالتجوز

    وَالحَزم كُل الحَزم في التحرز

    And walk its path gently

    Contemplate matters for its secrets

  71. وَانتهز الفُرصة إِن الفُرصة

    تَعود إِن لَم تَنتهزها غَصه

    How many tips could mean your demise

    Do not take safe pawns carelessly

  72. وَاِسبق إِلى الأَجود سَبق ناقِد

    فَسَبقك الخَصم مِن المكابد

    Then wonder: why did he let you take his Rook freely?

    Perhaps he has a wicked trick

  73. كَسَبق أَهل الشام أَصحاب عَلى

    كَيداً إِلى ماء الفُرات السلسل

    In letting go of his solid piece

    Always reflect and think of the consequence

  74. فَلَم يَزَل أَهل العِراق هيما

    حَتّى جَلوا دُجى الوَغى البَهيما

    For it eludes the minds of most

    Do not take free bait from an enemy

  75. وَالشاه لا يخضر عِندَ الشاه

    فَإِنَّها مِن أَعظَم الدَّواهي

    Many a food killed its eater

    And refrain from habits-they bring harm

  76. وَقَد رَأينا أَمس في زَمانِنا

    وَحَسبنا المُدرك في عياننا

    Judge by what you see what you haven't

    Gracious giving brings humility

  77. لَما أَتى طغرلنكُ بَغذاذا

    وَلَم يَجد مِنهُ امرؤ معاذا

    While good traits grant determination

    Beware many an offer may be poisonous

  78. جاءَ إِلَيهِ الملك الرحيم

    مُستَقبلاً فَقالَ لا تريم

    For souls are lured to vile cravings

    Especially if it comes from a foe

  79. واستحضر الشطرنج للملاعبه

    إِشارة مِنهُ إِلى المُحارَبه

    How many times did a small soldier

    Defeat a mighty elephant troop

  80. حَتّى إِذا تَوَسطا في اللعبِ

    جاءَ ابن ميكال بِأَمر عجب

    Do not give something without gaining benefit

    For wastefulness is a despicable quality

  81. صافح عَمداً شاهه بِشاهه

    للطفه في الكَيد وَانتِباهه

    Do not despair from relief and grace

    And power arises after weakness

  82. فرد ذاكَ ابن بويه منكراً

    فَلج طغرلنك حَتّى أَكثَرا

    Sometimes after desperation

    Comes a spirit without toil or effort

  83. قالَ لَهُ وَغلط الرحيم

    وَقَد لعمري يَغلط الحَكيم

    So if you see victory looming

    Then do not neglect and fall in its seeking

  84. ما جَرت العادة أن الشاها

    يَدخل بيتَ الشاه قالَ آها

    And beware of tyranny and guard against greed

    For they are great causes of death

  85. فَلم دخلت بَيتنا وَضحكا

    أخطأ غرّ للرسوم تركا

    When the moon reaches its fullest

    Waning starts and decrease becomes certain

  86. ثُمَ أَشارَ أَن خذوه فاخذ

    وَقامَ مِن بَين يَديهِ وَجبذ

    And greed may bring the victorious one defeat

    As he disregards piety falling into conceit

  87. فَكُن كَثير الحفظ وَالتوقى

    وَسالِكاً فيهِ سَبيل الرفق

    Like when Zuhair revolted against Khalid’s lead

    As I recall from him a good lesson indeed

  88. وَفتش الأُمور عَن أَسرارِها

    كَم نكتَةٍ حتفك في إظهارها

    Be content if you fight for safety

    And avoid deeds that bring regrets

  89. لا تشرهن فَتَأخُذَن ما تَرَكا

    وَانظر لِماذا ترك الرخ لكا

    So if you see facing clear defeat

    Be first to extend peace offering

  90. فَرُبَّما كانَت لَهُ مَكيده

    في تَركِهِ عادته السديده

    A shrewd trader fears for his goods

    Any loss jeopardizing his capital

  91. انظر وَفَكر أَبَداً في العاقبة

    فَإنَّها عَن العُقول غائِبَه

    Then he works to gain more profits

    Through his business planning and tactics

  92. لا تشرهن إِلى حطام عاجِل

    كَم أكلةٍ أَودَت بِنَفس الآكل

    But if he senses the competition is tough

    You gain more benefit avoiding his rebuff

  93. وَبِئست العادة فاحذرها الشره

    وَقس بِما رَأيته ما لَم تَره

    So deceive him to meet for battle

    For cunning in war is the brain’s medal

  94. وَاكرم الخيم العَفاف وَالظلف

    وَالأُم الأَخلاق حرص وَصلف

    Like Mansur schemed against the Hassanid clan

    Until their disappearance removed his burden

  95. وَاحذر فَكَم من سَكرة مَسمومه

    حرص النُّفوس عادَةٌ مَذمومه

    Be it by breaking pawns or a Rook’s assault

    Or anything else and seeking peace

  96. لا سِيما ما كانَ مِن عَدوّ

    كَم صَبوَة جاءتكَ مِن سلو

    Until by his tricks he breaks their build

    Undoing by force what stance withstood

  97. لا تَفتح الدست وَلا الحَرب مَعاً

    وَاِقنَع بسلم ما وَجَدت مقنعا

    These are but a few examples cited

    Of what the game of chess has provided

  98. وَاِدفع اِساءات العِدى بِالحُسنى

    وَلا تخل يُسراك مثل اليُمنى

    Learn and reflect O you who understand!

    His opponent said: Listen and understand!

  99. وَاحفظ قَليل المال وَالكَثيرا

    وَاحرس صَغير الجُند وَالكَبيرا

    The game of dice, likewise contains

    Great wisdom if perceived by Reason

  100. لا تحقرن راجِلاً في الفَيلَق

    فَرُبَّما غلبته بِالبيذق

    Some men luck helps in all affairs

    Yet, whatever they do, luck never spares

  101. لا تَعطين شَيئاً بِغَير فائِدَه

    فَإِنَّها مِن السَّجايا الفاسِدَه

    Bringing him ugly disgraces

    Marring status, wealth and graces

  102. لا تَيأَسَن مِن فَرج وَلُطف

    وَقوة تَظهر بَعدَ ضَعف

    Until you see his luck is jinxed

    And blessing retreat turning cursed fainter

  103. فَرُبَّما جاءكَ بَعد الياس

    روح بِلا كَد وَلا التِماس

    Just like dice when numbers come as fixes

    And so it was with the deposed Commander

  104. فَإِن رَأَيت النَّصر قَد لاحَ لَكا

    فَلا تَقصر وَاحتَرز أن تهلكا

    The obedient one and the compliant

    Some are contrary, but reasonable

  105. وَالبَغي فَاحذره وَخيم المَرتع

    وَالعُجب فَاتركه شَديد المَصرَع

    If days once went bad, now better

    Meeting his woes gently, not bitter

  106. عِند تَمام البَدر يَبدو نَقصه

    ورُبَّما ضر الحَريص حِرصه

    So, through gentleness and calm, he earns

    What hardship and weary work won't confirm

  107. كَم بطرَ الغالب بَغيا فَتَرك

    عَنهُ التوقي وَاِستَهانَ فَهلك

    Thus growing while being scarce and limited

    His wisdom and finesse were the limit

  108. فرقع الخرق بلطف واجتهد

    وَامكر إِذا لَم يَنفَع الصدق وَكَد

    So days do not show his misfortunate spans

    Since he counters them with wisdom's plans

  109. كَذاكَ في صَفين كانَ الأَمر

    لَم ينج أَهل الشام إِلا المَكر

    Like a patient taking his medication

    Defeating illness and afflictions

  110. لَما رَموا بِالصيلم العَظيم

    وَعَجِزوا دَعوا إِلى التَحكيم

    Some men combine both traits

    Thriving as generous fortunate mates

  111. وَاحرص لِتَأخذ بِالخداع ما له

    وَلا تبق رجمة رِجاله

    Like Buwayhids, when ended were

    Their days before coming to accord

  112. لا تحقرن مِنهم صَغيراً محتقر

    فَرُبَّما أَسالَت النفس الأبر

    So this contrasts the reasonable fortunate man

    Versus the loser gone sunken

  113. أضعفهُ ما اِستَطَعت أن ضعفه

    يدني وَإِن طالَ مَداه حتفه

    As one dice roller helps in his throws

    The other through doom constantly lows

  114. وَأَبذل لَهُ نَفائس الأَموال

    تَدفع بِها شَدائد الأَهوال

    This contrasts the likes of good and bad fates

    And whether one's condition elates or grates

  115. فَالمَرء يفدي نَفسه بِوَفره

    عَساه أَن يَنجو بِهِ مِن أَسره

    Mu'nis matched his father's repute

    But no one matches Ibn Mansur's attribute!

  116. كَذاكَ في الشطرنج يَفدى الشاه

    بِغَيرِهِ مِن فَرط ما يَغشاه

    Do not compare others to his glory, you fool!

    For heroism came to him from ancestry's school

  117. وَإِن أَتى في جَحفل عَظيم

    مِن المَوالي وَمِن الصَّميم

    Then his personal greatness added much more

    As Sayf al-Dawla the lucky one swore:

  118. فَإِن تَكُن كثرتهم مجتمعه

    لطمع في النَّهب قَد جاوا مَعَه

    He is worshipped among his folks

    Due to his wisdom, generosity, might and strokes

  119. فَاشغلهم بِالنهب عَنهُ واعكر

    عَلَيهِ وَهوَ آمن لَم يَشعر

    With his insight, care of people and decisions fit

    Tying glory and fortune to his benefit

  120. كَذاكَ قَيس بن زُهير فعلا

    بِآل بَدر إِذ أَتوه جَحفَلا

    And ensuring their progress to increase

    These four features of him, at least

  121. لَما أَتى حُذيفة بن بَدر

    في عَدَد سَد فجاج البر

    His opponent grew angry and said embittered:

    And I say, honesty being the pious one's measure

  122. قالَ الرَّبيع عِندَها لِقَيس

    أَشر فَأَنتَ حُوَّلٌ ذو كَيس

    In praise of dice, which also contains

    Wisdom for one with higher aims

  123. فَقالَ قَيس ناصِحاً يا عَبس

    الحَق باد لَيسَ فيهِ لَبس

    For they modeled the cosmos and heavens' motion

    And planets revolving without commotion

  124. ما فيهم ذو حَنق عَلَينا

    وَما لَهُم مِن برةٍ لَدَينا

    Seeking portions, some gain the whole

    How many who sought much, returned with mole

  125. بَل كُلُّ مَن جاءَ لحرص وَطَمع

    وَلَو حَوى شَيئاً مِن النهب رجع

    Some get what they want

    So their fortune is constant

  126. وَلَم يُحارب عَن بَني ذبيان

    مخاطراً بِالنفس وَالحصان

    Others gets the contrary of what they sought

    Returning angry and provoked at their lot

  127. فخلَّفوا الأَموال وَالأَثقالا

    وَغادَروها لَهُم أنفالا

    Some remain oppressed prisoners

    As if shackled, perplexed, whiners

  128. فَكانَ ما دبَّر قَيس وَافترق

    جَيش الفَزاري جَميعاً وَانطلق

    Held captive by the dice though free

    Burning inside for their agony

  129. وَجاءَهُم وَهُم عَلى الهباءة

    فَساءَ قَيساً أعظم المساءة

    The more they rebuke and blame

    Further disobeying their Lord's claim

  130. وَرُبَّما ضرَّك بَعض مالكا

    وَساءَكَ المحسن مِن رِجالكا

    So is he who rejects what God gives

    Not happy with sustenance He bids

  131. حَتّى تَود أنهُ لَم يَكُن

    يَوم رَأَيت شَخصه في الزَّمَن

    And takes without thankfulness and gratitude

    Comes in his deeds with bad attitude

  132. إِن اعتضاد الشاه بِالفرزان

    مَوعِظَة في السر للسلطان

    The Indian said: You speak truthfully

    However we have major priority

  133. لِيتَقي في الخَطب بِالوَزير

    مُفَوضاً إِلَيهِ في الأُمور

    Our works like Kalila and Dimnah

    Judge in our favor for wisdom and wit

  134. وَكُل إِنسان فَلا بُدَ لَه

    مِن صاحب يَحمل ما أَثقَله

    So much lessons and knowledge therein

    Amazing minds of wisdom within

  135. معاضد في رَأيهِ وَنصحه

    موافق في حَربِهِ وَصُلحه

    The Persian said: Had you known

  136. وَصاحب للسر ذي كتمان

    مخالص في السر وَالإعلان

    What these books mean you would have shown

  137. وَالشاه قَد يَحمل في الأَحيان

    وَحربهُ أغيظ للأقران

  138. وَذاكَ عِندَ شدة شَديده

    وَشَوكة وَشيكة حَديده

    It exposes your deficiency without ability

    It does not harm the full moon's glow

  139. سار ابن مَروان لِحَرب مصعب

    وَقالَ إن سارَ سِواي يغلب

    If the blind man cannot enjoy its show

    How much wisdom that assemblies extol

  140. وَالحَزم كُل الحَزم في المُطاوَلَة

    وَالصَّبر لا في سُرعة المُزاوَلَة

    Yet you remain unaware in your shoal

    I heard of an ascetic's pious phrase

  141. بِذاكَ شَيخ العَرَب المُهلبُ

    في حَربِه الشراة كانَ يغلب

    When night surprised him without delay

    He said: I did not hear it, tell me again

  142. لا تحرج الخَصم فَفي إحراجِه

    جَميع ما تكره مِن لجاجه

    For news benefit only the retaining men

  143. إِن عدياً إِذ تَعَدى الحَدّا

    وَجاءَ في قَتل بَجير إِدَّا

  144. واحرج الحرث لاقى شرا

    وجر من إحراجه ما جرَّا

  145. وَالعقد كَالخندَق في التّحصين

    وَضَربه العَرضي كَالكَمين

  146. فَإِنَّما الرِّجال بِالإخوان

    وَاليَد بِالساعد وَالبَنان

  147. كَذَلِكَ السُّلطان بِالرِّجال

    وَالمال لا ملك بِغَير مال

  148. لا تَطلب الغاية بِاللجاج

    وَكُن إِذا كَوَيت ذا إنضاج

  149. فَما أَتى القائم مِن أَهل اللعب

    ذو قُوة ظاهرة إِلا غلب

  150. وَقل ما يَلعَب بِالقَوائم

    إِلا فَتى بِالحَرب غَير عالم

  151. فَإِنَّهُ بَغى عَلى الرِّجال

    وَذاكَ مِن دَقائِق الخلال

  152. فَالبَغي داء ما له دَواء

    لَيسَ لملك مَعهُ بقاءُ

  153. لا تَغترر فيها بِفَضل قوتك

    فَرُبَّما وَقَعت جوف هوتك

  154. قَول زُهَير إِذ بَغى لِخالد

    عَلى الَّذي أذكر مِنهُ شاهِدي

  155. إقنع إِذا حارَبتَ بِالسلامة

    وَاحذر فعالاً توجب الندامة

  156. فَإن رَأَيت وَجه غَلب لائِحاً

    فَكُن لأَقفال الدسوت فاتِحا

  157. فَالتاجر الكَيس في التِّجارة

    مَن خافَ في مَتجره الخَسارة

  158. يَجهَد في تَحصيل رَأس ماله

    ثُم يَروم الربح بِاحتياله

  159. وَإِن هُوَ اِستَخفى عَن المُبارَزَه

    فَأنتَ أَحظى مِنهُ بِالمناجزه

  160. فَاخدعه كَي يَظهر لِلقاء

    إِن الخِداع آية الدهاء

  161. كَذلكَ المَنصور كادَ اِبنَي حسن

    فَظَهَرا بَعد اختِفاء للمحن

  162. مِن عقد الفيل أَو الفرزانا

    أَو غَيرِهِ وَطَلب الأَمانا

  163. فَكَيدُهُ حَتّى يَحل عقده

    مفتتحاً بِيَده ما سَدَّه

  164. هَذا قَليل مِن كَثير ما ذكر

    بلعب الشطرنج فافهم وَاعتبر

  165. قالَ لَهُ صاحِبه اسمع وافهم

    فَإِنَّما العُلوم بالتعلم

  166. في النرد أَيضاً حكمة عَظيمة

    تدركها الخَواطر السليمة

  167. في الناس من تسعده الأَقدار

    وَفعله جَميعه إِدبار

  168. فَلا يَزال بِقَبيح خُرقِة

    يُفسد حال جَاهه وَرزقه

  169. حَتّى تَرى سعوده نحوساً

    وَيَنثَني ذاكَ النَّعيم بوسا

  170. كمثل من تسعده الفُصوص

    وَفعله مُزيف مغموص

  171. كَما جَرى في نَوبة المخلوع

    وَقصة الطائع وَالمُطيع

  172. وَمِنهُم بِعكسه اللبيب

    الجاهد الموفق الأَديب

  173. إِن كاده الدَّهر بِسوء عنفه

    قابل بَلواه بِحُسن لطفهِ

  174. فَنالَ بالرفق وَبِالتَأَني

    ما لَم يَنَل بالحرص وَالتعني

  175. فَيَغتَدي وَهوَ الفَقير ذا نَشب

    وَعقله وَلُطفه كانَ السَّبب

  176. فَلا يَبين سوء فعل دَهره

    عَلَيهِ مِن تَدبيره في أَمره

  177. مثل عَليل يَلزم الدواء

    فَيَقهر الأَمراض وَالأَدواء

  178. فَذاكَ مثل مَن يَجور الفصُّ

    عَليهِ فَهوَ بِالأَذى مُختَص

  179. وَهوَ بِحُسن اللعب وَالتَدبير

    يَسد خرق الفَص بِالتقدير

  180. يَصلح إِفساد الفُصوص حذقه

    وَيَرقع الخرق العَظيم رفقه

  181. كَذَلِكَ المَأمون في تَدبيره

    نالَ المُنى في البُعد مِن سَريره

  182. وَمِنهُم مَن يَجمَع الحالين

    فَيَغتَدي وَهوَ سَخين العَين

  183. مثل بَني بويه لَما اِنقَضَت

    أَيامهُم ما اِصطَلَحوا حَتى مَضَت

  184. فَمثل ذاكَ الجاهل المَجدود

    وَعَكس ذاكَ العاقل المَحدودُ

  185. كمحسن في نَقلِهِ وَضَربِهِ

    مثل معين جَدِّهِ بلبه

  186. مثل ابن مَنصور وَلا مثل لَهُ

    فَلا تشبه مَجده يا أَبلَه

  187. أَورثه المَجد دَبيس جده

    ثُم أَعانَ الإرث مِنهُ جده

  188. فَقالَ سَيف الدَّولة المَسعود

    كَأَنَّهُ في قَومِهِ مَعبود

  189. بِرَأيهِ وَجوده وَبَأسِه

    وَحكمه وَرفقه بِناسه

  190. يَرتَبط الدَولة وَالسَعادة

    وَيَقتَضي بِشُكرِها الزِيادة

  191. فَهَذِهِ فيهِ رُموز أَربَعه

    فَاغتاظَ مِنهُ خَصمهُ إِذ سَمِعَه

  192. فَقالَ أَيضاً وَهوَ غَير آفك

    في قَولِهِ وَالصدق دين الناسك

  193. في مَدحِهِ النرد وَفيهِ حكمة

    أُخرى لِمَن كانَ بَعيد الهمة

  194. لأنهم حَكوا بِهِ أَمر الفلك

    وَالجارِيات الزهر في ذات الحبك

  195. يَطلب بَعضاً فَيَنال كلا

    كَم مكثر عادَ بِهِ مقلا

  196. فَبَعضهُم يَأنيه ما يُريد

    فمثله في أَمرِهِ السعيد

  197. وَبَعضهُم يَأتيه ضد ما رَجا

    فَيَغتَدي مِنها مُغيظاً مُحرجا

  198. وَبَعضهُم في مَوضع مُستأسر

    كَأَنَّه معتقل محير

  199. فُهوَ أَسير في يَدَيها عان

    مُحتَرق القَلب لَما يُعاني

  200. وَكُلما عاتبها وَسَبها

    غَيظاً عصته وَأطاعت رَبها

  201. كَذاكَ مَن يُنكر حُكم رَبه

    وَلا يَكون راضِياً بِكسبه

  202. وآخذاً ما جاءهُ بِشُكر

    فَقَد أَتى في فعله بنكر

  203. قالَ لَهُ الهندي وَهوَ صادق

    لَكن لَنا فَضل عَلَيكُم سابق

  204. تَصنيفنا كَليلة وَدمنة

    يقضي لَنا بحكمة وَفطنة

  205. كَم فيهِ مِن مَوعظَةٍ وَعلم

    وَحكمة تعجب أَهل الفهم

  206. قالَ لَهُ الفرسيُّ في سِواه

    لَو كُنت ذا علم بِه معناه

  207. قال وَما رَأَيتهُ قالَ أَجَل

    ذاكَ لِنَقص فيك لَيسَ يحتمل

  208. لَيسَ يضر البَدر في سَناه

    أَنَّ الضَرير قَط لا يراه

  209. كَم حكمة ضَجت بِها المَحافل

    مَليحة وَأنتَ عَنها غافل

  210. سَمعت بِاللَّه حَديث الناسك

    إِذ راعَهُ اللَّيل بلص فاتك

  211. فَقال لم أسمعه فاذكر أسمع

    لا تَنفَع الأَخبار إِلا مَن يَعي
