لصُحبة السلطان

شَرط عَظيم الشان

The companionship of the sultan

Is of utmost glory

الحفظ للسان

في السر وَالإِعلان

Guard your tongue

Both in private and openly

وَقلة الخلاف

وَكَثرة الأَلطاف

And have little conflict

And much kindness

وَالصَّبر وَالمُلازمه

وَالصدق وَالمداومه

And patience and steadfastness

And truthfulness and consistency

وَالقَول بِالوِفاق

وَحذر الشقاق

And words of agreement

And beware of discord

وَالصدق وَالتصديق

وَالرفق وَالرفيق

And honesty and belief

And gentleness and a gentle companion

وَخدمة الأصحاب

وَالذل لِلحِجاب

And serve the lords

And humility to the chamberlain

وَالقَصد في الأُمور

في البُعد وَالحُضور

And moderation in matters

Both far and near

فَإِن في الإِكثار

داعية الإِضجار

For in excess

Is annoyance and bitterness

وَالانقِطاع موحشُ

وَالمَوت أَن يستَوحشوا

And isolation is gloomy

And death makes them anxious

لا تَطلُب الزِّياده

فَتحرم الإِراده

Do not seek increase

And so lose favor

لا تَذكرنَّ حَقا

عَلَيهم فَتَشقى

Do not mention

Rights over them and so suffer

لا تفرطن في النصح

فَفيه بَعض القبح

Do not overdo advice

For in it some shame

صَدقهم إِن قالوا

عدِّلهمُ إِن مالوا

Believe them if they speak

Make allowances if they stray

اشهد لَهُم بالزور

وَدل بِالغُرور

Bear witness for them falsely

And mislead with lies

لا تفشين أَسرارَهُم

لا تذكرن أَخبارَهُم

Do not spread their secrets

Nor mention their news

لا تحقرن إِكرامهم

لا تكفرن إنعامهم

Do not belittle their honor

Nor be ungrateful for their favor

لا تَشكون أَفعالهُم

لا تأمنن ملالهم

Do not complain of their deeds

Nor rely on their friendship

لا تشكون حِجابهم

لا تكثرن عِتابَهُم

Do not complain of their chamberlain

Nor overly reproach them

لا تَسعين عِندهم

لا توجبن حقدهم

Do not strive to please them

Nor earn their malice

لا تكثر الدلالا

فَتورث الملالا

Do not be overly helpful

And so cause boredom

لا تَأمن النديما

لا تجرح الكَريما

Do not trust the boon companion

Nor wound the generous one

لا تغترر بِحُبهم

لا تَنخدع بِقُربهم

Do not be fooled by their love

Nor tricked by their nearness

لا تَنبَسط إليهم

لا تكثرن عَليهم

Do not be too familiar with them

Nor burden them overly

إِياكَ وَالمَشوره

فَإِنَّها مَحذوره

Beware consultation

For it is hazardous

فَإِن أَرادوك لَها

فَلا تَكُن مولها

And if they want you for it

Do not be inclined to it

أشر عَلَيهم تابِعا

أَهواءَهُم لا رادِعا

Counsel them following their whims

Not checking them

عَلَيكَ بِالتوسط

وَاِحذر مِن التبَسط

You must be balanced

And avoid being patronizing

لا تَأمنن غَدرَهم

لا تَعصين أَمرهم

Do not trust their loyalty

Nor disobey their command

لا تَقطَعن شُكرَهم

لا تُنكرن مَكرَهُم

Do not cut off their thanks

Nor deny their guile

وَكُن عَلى أَعدائهم

كَالسيف مِن وَرائهم

And be to their enemies

As a sword behind them

لا تنطقن إِن غَضِبوا

لا تَضحَكن إِن لَعِبوا

Do not speak if they are angry

Nor laugh if they jest

لا تحجبن أَموالهم

وَلا تعب أَفعالَهُم

Do not restrict their wealth

Nor blame their deeds

إِياكَ وَالشفاعَه

فَإِنَّها رقاعَه

Beware intercession

For it is humiliation

إِياكَ وَالسعايَه

في العَزل وَالولايَه

Beware scheming

For position or rule

أخدعهم بِالمال

وَلين المَقال

Deceive them with money

And soften your words

خَير الأُمور الوَسَط

حُب التناهي غَلَط

The best matter is moderation

Loving extremes is wrong

المثل القَديم

حَرره الحَكيم

An ancient proverb

Written by the wise one

ما طارَ طَير واِرتَفَع

إِلا كَما طارَ وَقَع

No bird has flown high

Except to fall as it flew
