1. A discerning, rational man’s surmise is worth more

    than an ignorant man’s certainty.

  2. Do not go far afield in search of sustenance;

    do not seek lofty rank.

  3. Do not dye your gray hair—

    that alone is shame enough.

  4. Suppose I could conceal my gray hair;

  5. There is no life worth living for the poor man,

    despite his abundant learning,

  6. for he is held in contempt,

    and his standing is low.

  7. Turn away from the ignorant:

    they are slaves to wealth,

  8. friends of the governor,

    and a scourge to the idle, workless man.

  9. Whomever Fortune favors,

    they remain gathered devotedly around him,

  10. extolling wealth

    and praising the schemer,

  11. even if they do not obtain

    from him any kindness worth remembering.
