I called loudly to the cupbearer, "Pass it round!"
For darkness was determined to spend the night.
The boughs of the acacia were drunk with wine,
And birds sang, replacing song after song.
The call to prayer sounded, responding to it
Were church bells in the hills, chiming all around.
The time was right, so play for me my bride
Who longs for youth as nights go by.
Serve it, a child with soft, bright cheeks,
Graceful, beloved, pampered and spoiled.
I sing, with tender limbs that bend
Minds like boughs swaying gently in the wind.
With plaintive love, desire, longing and pain,
Rapture, inclination, balance and restrain.
I drank coffee black as gazelle’s eyes
With the gazelle and the gazelle’s fawn.
