شَوائل العَقارب

خَير مِن الأَقارب

The stings of scorpions

Are better than relatives

فدارِهم بِاللطف

وَخذهم بِالعُنف

So be gentle with their home

And grab them violently

مبرة في جفوه

وَقربة مِن قَسوه

Bitter in their dryness

And kinship from their hardness

إِياكَ أَن تطمعهم

فيكَ وَأن تشبعهم

Beware desiring from them

And satiating them

إِنكَ إِن بسطهم

في المال أَو سلطتهم

If you extend to them

Money or power

تَبسطوا عَلَيكا

وَاصفروا يَديكا

They overextend to you

And your hands yellow

وَذكروا الأَرحاما

وَأكثروا الملاما

They recall kinship

And increase blame

وَاِحتَقَروا السُلطانا

وَأَوحشوا الأَعوانا

Looking down on the ruler

Making officials lonely

وَخَربوا الأَعمالا

وَضَيعوا الأَموالا

Ruining affairs

Wasting money

وَامنعوا عقابكا

وَاِحتَقَروا ثَوابكا

Preventing your punishment

Looking down on your reward

وَخالفوكَ أَمرا

وَاِحتَقَروكَ زجرا

Disobeying orders

Belittling your rebuke

وَفَعلوا ما شاءوا

وَذاكَ فَاِعلم داء

Doing as they please

Know that is sickness

وَاِطرَحوا المُراقبه

وَتقبح المُعاقبه

Rejecting supervision

Deeming punishment ugly

وَتسمج المُعاتبه

وَتُكثر المُغالبه

Finding fault tiresome

Increasing contention

فَاِستعمل البَعيدا

الناصح الوَدودا

So employ the distant

The friendly advisor

وَمن إِذا عاقبته

ظَنكَ قَد راقَبته

And whoever you punish

Thinks you have supervised him
