إِذا ابتليت فَاِصبر
الدَّهر مثل المعبر
When afflicted, be patient,
Time is like a passage,
لَيسَ يَدوم حال
شَحم المنى هزال
No state endures,
The fat of good fortune becomes lean.
ما لليالي ذَنب
وَلا عَلَيها عَتب
The nights bear no sin,
And deserve no reproach.
الدَّهر ذو اِغتِيال
وَالمَرء ذو احتِيال
Time betrays and kills,
While man schemes and deceives.
قَد تَفتك الليالي
بِحيلة المُحتال
The nights can undo
The schemes of the deceiver.
لَيسَ احتِمال العار
مِن شيَم الأَحرار
Bearing dishonor is not
The way of the noble.
احمل إِذا احتمَلتا
تمم إِذا فَعلتا
Uphold if you bear,
Complete if you act,
انجز إِذا وَعَدتا
ابرم إِذا عَقدتا
Fulfill if you promise,
Conclude if you tie the knot.
تَغاب فَالتغابي
دين ذَوي الأَلباب
Be absent if absent,
The creed of the wise.
عَلَيكَ بِالتغافل
للكيد وَالتَّجاهل
Turn a blind eye,
To plotting and ignorance.
الحيلة الخفيه
كَالصعدة الخَطيه
Subtle cunning,
Like hidden poison.
في الحَرب لا بَل أَمضى
العمر دين يقضى
In war no, but more binding -
A life’s debt to be paid.
لا تُكثر الدلالا
فَتورث الملالا
Too much sweetness
Breeds boredom.
وَكَثرة التَّحلي
تَدعو إِلى التَّسلي
Excess ornamentation
Invites laxity.
