عادت فزارت وِسادي

بعد الفراق البَغيضة

You have come back, O night visitor,

After the hateful parting,

صديقةُ المتنبي

تلكَ الوقَاحُ الحَريضه

O friend of Al-Mutanabbi,

You impudent, wanton thing.

وجمَّشتني وكانت

ثيابُ نومي رحيَضه

You have prodded me when

My nightgown was soiled.

وخلَّفت في ضلوعي

ما في الجفونِ الَمريضه

And you have left in my ribs

What you left in the eyes of the sick.
