فَقالَت الحَمامه
من لَك بِالسَّلامة
The dove said:
Who can guarantee your safety?
وَالدَّهر داء كله
ماق فَماق أَهله
And time is sick through and through,
Exhausting its people.
نعم الرَّفيق الرفق
بئس القرين الخرق
A gentle companion is best.
Wretched is the coarse one!
العجب بئس الخله
الكبر أَردى حله
Strange is the bad company.
Pride unravels the strongest tie.
البُخل عَيب فاضح
الجود سترٌ صالح
Stinginess is a disgraceful vice.
Generosity is an honorable veil.
شر الخلال الكبر
أَبقى البَقاء الذكر
The worst trait is arrogance.
Renown endures.
شَر المَقال الكَذب
خَير الخلال الأَدب
The worst speech is lies.
The best trait is discretion.
الصَّمت أَوقى جنه
الجود خَير سنه
Silence is the safest armor.
Generosity is the best tradition.
العَقل قاض عادل
العجب داء قاتل
Reason is a just judge.
Vanity is a fatal disease.
الصَّبر سَيف ماض
الرَّأي نعم القاضي
Patience is an unsheathed sword.
Wisdom is the best arbitrator.
الجَهل شين للفتى
الشَّيب مَوت إن أَتى
Ignorance disgraces the youth.
If old age comes, it is death.
العُمر ضَيف راحل
المال ظل زائل
Life is a fleeting guest.
Wealth is a vanishing shadow.
الحرص لَوم وَصلف
الزهد عز وشرف
Greed is blame and coarseness.
Asceticism is honor and nobility.
الشر شر صاحب
الجبه حَظ الكاذب
The origin of purity is noble lineage.
The most righteous folk
الدَّهر مَوت أَو هَرَم
الخرق وَهن وَنَدم
Are the noblest in manners.
Lineage inclines
البر للحب سَبب
إِن البَخيل لا يحب
Toward ancestral roots.
The Lord enriches the generous.
أَصل الكَساد الخرق
أَعيا الرِّجال الرزق
The face of wealth is radiant.
Favors spoil
الحَزم سوء الظَّن
لا تكثر التَّجني
Those who delay them.
Lies, gossip and betrayal
الجود عنوان الشَّرَف
وَآفة الحسن الصلف
Are the worst traits.
Kings are not loyal.
طَهارة الأَخلاق
مِن كَرَم الأَعراق
Women do not keep their word.
Be slow in matters,
أَزكى الوَّرى فِعالا
أَكرَمَهُم أَحوالا
Especially joyful ones.
Hasten to good deeds
إِنَّ العُروق تنزع
إِلى الأُصول تَرجع
Lest you miss the chance.
Not all times
رَب الغِنى نَبيه
وَجه الغِنى وَجيه
Allow them to be done.
Seize opportunities
منَّ الصَّنيع يفسده
وَمطله ينكده
Lest they turn to sorrows.
Do not rejoice in attainment
الكذب وَالنَّميمه
وَالغَدر شر شيمه
Nor despair in trials.
The turns of fortune
ما للملوك ود
ما لِلنِّساء عَهد
Pass like clouds.
Do not be hasty and stumble.
تَأن في الأُمور
لا سيما السُّرور
Do not overdo and grow bored.
Beware stubbornness,
وَاعجل إِلى الخَيرات
مِن حَذر الفَوات
For it is foolishness.
When seeking a need,
فَلَيسَ كُل وَقت
لفعلها تَأت
Do not be importunate.
Abandon contention and debate,
تَوخ أَوقات الفُرَص
فَرُبَّما عادَت غصص
For life cannot be replaced.
Do not be hasty,
لا تَفرحن لِنائل
لا تَجزَعَن لِنازل
For haste is disgrace and shame.
You have none but yourself.
فَنوب النَّوائب
تَزول كَالسَّحائب
Do not neglect it.
Do not hoard for your wedding
لا تَعجلَن فَتعثر
لا تكثرن فَتضجر
Your reason above your perception.
Do not neglect your kind.
إِياكَ وَاللجاجه
فَإِنَّها سَماجه
Do not be ignorant of yourself.
Do not forget your past.
إِذا طَلَبت حاجه
فلا تكن هلباجه
Do not look down on your gender.
Beware wishing
دع المراء والجدل
فَلَيسَ للعمر بَدل
And excessive guessing.
Take certainty as safest.
لا تَعجلَن فَالعَجَلَه
مَذَلة وَمخجلَه
Do not rejoice in hearsay.
Others' deeds have passed.
ما لك غَير نَفسكا
لا تك عَنها ممسكا
Do not be forgetful.
Hasten forgiveness
لا تدخرن لعرسكا
عَقلك فَوقَ حسكا
And delay punishment,
Unless you fear corruption.
لا تهملن جنسكا
لا تجهلن نَفسَكا
And hold to righteousness.
Give rights
لا تنسين أَمسكا
لا تَحقرن جنسكا
Not by whim and bias,
Lest the blossoms wither
إياك وَالتَّمني
وَكَثرة التَّظني
And thorns proliferate.
People are brothers in bounty.
خُذ اليَقين أَودع
لا تَفرحن بِالمَسمع
Existence is not like nonexistence.
None attained glory but the generous.
جاز فعال الناس
وَلا تَكُن بِالناسي
None attained renown but the open-handed.
Wealth is a great ally
وَعجل النوابا
وَأَخر العِقابا
By spending and saving it.
ما لَم تَخف فَساداً
وَلازم السدادا
وَاعطِ بِالحُقوق
لا بِالهَوى وَالموق
فَيفسد النَّبات
وَتكثر الكهاة
الناس إِخوان النعم
لَيسَ الوُجود كَالعَدَم
ما سادَ إِلا جائِد
ما جادَ إلا ماجِد
المال خَير عَون
بِبَذله وَالصَّون
