1. لو أُعطيَ الدّستُ لِسانا فنطَق

    لقال تاجُ الملكِ بي منك أحق

    If my hand could speak, it would say

    The crown of kingship is rightfully mine

  2. الآن قرَّت عينهُ ولم تزل

    مقسومةً بين البكاءِ والأرقَ

    Now his eyes find rest, yet remain

    Torn between weeping and sleeplessness

  3. بعَودِ مولانا وهل من نعمةٍ

    أكثرُ من خلاصهِ مما طَرَق

    With the return of our master - and is there any blessing

    Greater than his deliverance from what has befallen?

  4. جلا ظلامَ الخطبِ نورُ رأيهِ

    ووجهه كما جلا البدرُ الغَسَق

    The light of his wisdom dispelled the gloom of tribulations

    And his face shone like the full moon dispelling the darkness

  5. وكان في بحرِ الخطوبِ عائما

    لا يختَشي كالدّرّ لا يخشى الغَرقَ

    He was afloat on the sea of afflictions

    Fearing not to drown like a pearl fears not the deep

  6. كأنّه الدينارُ في النارِ إذا

    زادت لَظىً زادَ صفاءً وبَرَق

    He is like a golden dinar in the fire

    The hotter the flames, the purer and brighter it gleams

  7. والعودُ بالإحراقِ يبدو عَرفُه

    والمِسك أذكى عبَقا إذا سُحِق

    The aloes wood reveals its fragrance

    When lit aflame, and musk is most fragrant when crushed

  8. والسيفُ لولا مِدوَسُ الصيقلِ ما

    جّذَّ الرقابَ حدُّه ولا ذَلَق

    Without the hammer's blows, the sword

    Would not sharpen to cut necks and slice

  9. ما كان حبساً ذاكَ بل صِيانة

    والصَّونُ للشيِ النَفيسِ مُستَحق

    His seclusion was not imprisonment, but preservation

    Guarding treasures is a worthy duty

  10. أمُنكرٌ صَونَ الضلوعِ القلبَ أم

    مُستبدَعٌ صَونُ الجفونِ للحدَق

    Is shielding the heart by ribs considered odd?

    Or safeguarding eyes with eyelids deemed absurd?

  11. لولا سِرارُ البدرِ ما تمَّ فهل

    يُؤيَسُ من تمامه إذا امّحَق

    Without the moon's concealment, it could not be full

    Should its perfection be despaired of when eclipsed?

  12. وقد يُصانُ السيفُ بالغمدِ وقد

    يَغيبُ عُلويُّ النجومِ في الشفق

    A sword may be sheathed for protection

    And the stars fade into the sunset, veiled from sight
