1. قالَ سَمعتُ أن ذئباً أَبصرا

    غَزالة ترضع خَشفاً أَحوَرَا

    I heard that a wolf saw

    A gazelle nursing a young fawn

  2. لَكنها مَريضة هَزيلة

    وَساقَها مَكسورة عَليله

    But she was weak and frail

    Her leg was broken and sick

  3. قَد مَسها الضر فَعادَت نضوا

    يَحسبها الراؤون مِنها شلوا

    She was struck by harm and became emaciated

    Onlookers thought she was paralyzed

  4. فَقالَ إِن أَكلَتها لَم أَشبع

    وَلَيسَ لَحم مثلها بمقنع

    So the wolf said, if I eat her I won't be full

    And no meat is as satisfying as hers

  5. وَالرَأي أَن أَعلفها أَياما

    فَإِنَّها لا تَجد الطعاما

    It's best that I feed her for days

    Since she cannot find food

  6. لَعَلَها تسمن ثُم أَعمد

    يَومئذ لَها وَذاك أَرشَد

    Maybe she will fatten up, then I will pounce

    That would be the wiser course

  7. فَجاءَها مُسلما فَقالا

    وَالذئب لا يُصادق الغَزالا

    A Muslim came and said to him

    A wolf does not befriend a gazelle

  8. إِلا لِكَيد كامن وَمَكر

    جزّ قَصير أَنفه لأَمر

    Except with hidden deceit and cunning

    Cut short your evil, it's the right thing

  9. يا أُخت ما حالك قالَت شر

    وَغَرها وَالشهم لا يغتَر

    Sister, how are you, she said, bad

    But she was deceived, the valiant are not deceived

  10. وَأظهر اللطف لَها وَالرفقا

    فَقَد رأَتهُ للشقاء حَقا

    He showed her kindness and gentleness

    For she saw he was truly wretched

  11. وَشَكَت الجُوع إَلَيهِ فَبَكى

    وَأظهر الخُشوع وَالتنَسكا

    She complained of hunger, so he wept

    And showed devotion and piety

  12. وَقالَ إِني تُبت مِن عداوتي

    للوحش حَتّى انكسرَت ضَراوَتي

    And said, I have repented from my enmity

    To beasts, until my aggression was broken

  13. حَلفتُ لا آكل جهدَ حلف

    إِلا الَّذي يَموت حتف الأَنف

    I swore not to eat any prey

    Except what dies a natural death

  14. فَبئست الطبيعة القَساوة

    وَالفَتك بِالنُفوس وَالضراوة

    How wretched is the brutal nature

    That kills souls and is aggressive

  15. إِن لَم يَكُن جنسَهُم كَجنسي

    فَإِنَّما نُفوسهُم كَنَفسي

    Even if they are not of my kind

    Their souls are like mine

  16. وَإِن إِفسادي كَون صوره

    لِشَهوة تعرض أَو ضَروره

    And my corruption was due to desire

    Or need, which is ignorance and injustice

  17. ظُلم وَجَهل لَيسَ فيهِ شَك

    وَلَستُ مِن إثم بِهِ أنفك

    Of which there is no doubt

    And I cannot detach from its sin

  18. حَتّى مَتى تَبكي العُيون فَتكى

    كَم مُقلة مِن سوء فعلي تَبكي

    Until when will eyes shed bloody tears for my crimes

    How many bereaved mothers weep for my misdeeds

  19. وَكَبد أَحرَقتها بالثكل

    وَولد أيتمته بِالأَكل

    And livers I burnt with loss

    And children I orphaned by eating

  20. وَقَد عَلمت وَاللبيب يَعلم

    بالطبع لا يَرحم مَن لا يرحَم

    I knew, and the wise know

    That the beast by nature has no mercy

  21. فَتُبت مِن قَساوَتي وَصبوتي

    وَقُلت أمحو حَوبَتي بِتَوبَتي

    So I repented from my cruelty and madness

    And said I will erase my sins with repentance

  22. وَمَر مِن ساعَتِهِ فَجاءَها

    بعلف حشت بِهِ أَحشاءَها

    Some time passed, and he came to her

    With fodder that filled her stomach

  23. وَلَم يَزَل يعلفها وَيَجتَهد

    كَيداً وَمَن يَعجَز عَن الأَمر يكد

    He kept feeding her and working hard at it

    Deceit comes naturally when unable to achieve by force

  24. وَلَم تَزَل تَدعو لَهُ وَتشكره

    مُذ صدقت مِن نسكهِ ما يذكره

    And she kept praying for him and thanking him

    Since she believed his show of piety

  25. لَم تَدرِ كَيفَ قصد أَن يكيدَها

    أَضحى يقوتها لِكي يَقودَها

    She did not know that he aimed to deceive her

    He was fattening her up so he could devour her

  26. حَتّى إِذا ما رَجعت كَالتولب

    وَأَصبَحَت مِن شحمها كَالشوقب

    Until when she became fat like an ibex

    And her flesh was like pure fat

  27. عافصها بوثبة شَديده

    محكماً أَنيابه الحَديده

    He pounced on her with great force

    Sinking his steel fangs in

  28. وَهَكَذا لَو تَفهَمون الأنس

    يبركم أَرفقهم لِيَقسو

    And so, if you understood human nature

    The gentlest would be the cruelest

  29. وَأَنتُم لِقلة الأفهام

    وَسفه العُقول وَالأَحلام

    And you, out of stupid minds

    And foolish dreams and thoughts

  30. تَرون سوء فعلهم عَيانا

    وَلا تَرونَ ذالِكُم عُدوانا

    You see their evil plainly

    But do not see your own transgression

  31. إن أَقل مَن تَرى أَذهانا

    من حسب الإِساءة الإِحسانا

    The least perceptive minds

    Are those who take harm as a favour

  32. قالَ أَبو أَيوب في جَوابه

    قَد يغلب المَرء عَلى صَوابه

    Abu Ayyub replied

    A man may lose his better judgement

  33. إِنكَ ما أنصفت في المَقال

    وَلا عَدَوت زُخرف المحال

    You have not been just in this talk

    And you cling to empty arguments

  34. لزمت للجهل قَبيح الظاهر

    وَما نَظَرت حسن السَرائر

    You are bound to reprehensible outward appearances

    And do not consider the good hearts

  35. وَذاكَ فاعلم عادة الجهال

    وَسنة الأَغمار وَالأرذال

    That is the way of ignoramuses

    And the custom of fools and rabble

  36. إن يَقصدوا ظَواهر الأَقوال

    بِالطعن وَالتَزييف بِالجدال

    Judging by outward words

    With fault-finding and fabrication in debate

  37. وَيَغفَلون عَن خَفيِّ الحكمه

    وَلَو رَأوها لأَزالوا النهمه

    And neglecting hidden wisdom

    Otherwise, worry would disappear

  38. كَم حسن ظاهر قَبيح

    وَسمج عُنوانهُ مَليح

    How much good appears ugly

    And repulsive in name yet beautiful

  39. وَحكمة خافية وَمصلحه

    للناس في مَعارض مُستقبحه

    And hidden wisdom and benefit

    Lie in what appears reprehensible

  40. تخفى عَلى الجهال وَالأَغمار

    لجهلهم بحكمة الجبار

    Hidden from the ignorant and foolish

    Through their ignorance of the Wise Lord's plan

  41. من عَرَفَ اللَّه أَزال التهمه

    وَقال كُل فعله للحكمه

    Who knows God removes blame

    And says all His actions have purpose

  42. قَد تَضرب الأُم الرؤوم طِفلَها

    فَهَل يَذم ذو رَشاد فعلها

    A mother may strike her child

    Would the wise blame her actions?

  43. لعلمهم بِأَنَّها شَفيقه

    عَلى بَنيها وَبِهم رَفيقه

    Knowing she is compassionate

    And kind to her children

  44. وَإِنَّما تَضربه لنفعه

    وَزَجره عَن غَيهِ وَمَنعه

    She only strikes for benefit

    To deter him from error and forbid him

  45. لأَنَّها أَعلَم بِالمصالح

    مِنهُ وَأَهدى للسبيل الواضِح

    For she knows what is best

    More than the child and guides to the clear path

  46. وَإِن مَن يَقصد قَلعَ ضرسه

    لَم يَعتمد إِلا صَلاحَ نَفسه

    And one who aims to extract a molar

    Only intends what will heal him

  47. وَقَد تَرى شَيخاً كَبيراً فانياً

    عاش عَقيماً يَرهب المواليا

    You may see an old man, near death

    Who lived childless, dreading heirs

  48. وَيَسأَلُ اللَّه تَعالى وَلَدا

    حَتَّى إِذا رزقه ما نَشَدا

    Beseeching God for a son

    Until granted what he sought

  49. وَجاءهُ ابن ذكر مثل القَمَر

    وَالشيخ ذو مال كَثير وَبَدر

    And there came to him a boy like the moon

    While the old man had wealth and bounty

  50. أسلمه لِقسوة المعلم

    ولَم يَكُن عَلَيهِ ذا ترحم

    Who he put under the harsh teacher

    Having no mercy on him

  51. يَقتل في المَكتَب بِالهراجر

    وَيَقطَع الليل بجفن ساهر

    Killing him in school with blows

    And keeping him up late at night

  52. حَتّى إِذا ما أتقن الآدابا

    ألزمه الدكان وَالعَذابا

    Until having mastered knowledge

    He confined him to the shop and torment

  53. وَرُبَّما خاطر في البَحر بِهِ

    مِن بَعدِ ما قاساه في مَكتبه

    And maybe risked him at sea after

    What he suffered in school

  54. فَهَل يَقول قائل قَد خرف

    وإنَّهُ بِفعله ما أنصَفا

    Would anyone say he had lost his mind

    And acted unjustly

  55. إِذ هُو ذو مال كَثير العَدد

    وَما أَتاهُ غَير هَذا الوَلَد

    Since he was wealthy

    And had no other son but him

  56. فلِم بِأَصناف الأَذى يعذبه

    المال يَكفيهِ فَلَم يهذبه

    Why torture him in so many ways

    His money would suffice, so why refine him

  57. لِمَ لا يَكون وادِعاً في أَهله

    مقتَنِعاً بِماله وَجَهله

    Why not stay with his family

    Content with his wealth and ignorance?

  58. وَهَكَذا الطبيب إِذ يُداوي

    بِالقَطع وَالمسهل وَالمكاوى

    Similarly the doctor who treats

    With incisions, purges, cautery

  59. وَحقنة وَكية وَقَطع

    وَمنضج صَعب شَديد اللذع

    Injections, cupping, cutting

    And bitter, painful concoctions

  60. وَرَبنا قَد خَلَق السِّباعا

    وَحَشَرات خبثت طِباعا

    Our Lord created beasts

    Evil by nature

  61. وَفي الجَميع حكمة خَفيه

    لِلَّهِ بَل ظاهِرة جَليه

    And insects of wicked dispositions

    Yet there is hidden wisdom in all

  62. إِن الَّذي في خَلقِهِ اِستَوَينا

    هُوَ الَّذي فَضلهم عَلَينا

    Nay, it is clear and manifest

    He who created us alike

  63. وَلَيسَ ذاكَ مِنهُم بِظلم

    لأَنَّهُم يَأتونه عَن علم

    Is He who favored them over us

    That is not unjust on their part

  64. فَقالَت العَنقاء إِن الموقا

    ظَن الفَتى عَدوه صَدوقا

    Because they act knowingly

    Everything that happens is a right

  65. إِن الجَهول بَينَنا نعلمه

    هُوَ الَّذي ينصف من يَظلمه

    And all said about them is truth

    There is no wrongdoing in the world

  66. فَما تَقول الخَيل فيما قَد جَرى

    قُلنَ صَواب كُل ما قَد ذَكَرا

    For all occurs by the Just Lord's leave

    Even if they had the best minds

  67. لأَنَّهُم ملاكنا والمالك

    لَيسَ لَهُ في أَمرِهِ مُشارك

    And used that to rule over people

    That would stop them from transgression

  68. يَفعَل ما شاءَ بِلا اِستثناء

    مُختَبِراً للعبد بِالبَلاء

    Indeed, and inspire them to kindness

    It is not the mark of an intelligent and noble soul

  69. يَصبر للقَضاء أَم لا يَصبر

    وَهوَ بِهِ من قَبل ذاكَ يخبر

    To destroy a perfect being out of gluttony

    Among the horses was a sorrel

  70. قالَ لَهُ لَقَد جَمَعت كذبا

    وَسَفهاً وَقَد أَتَيت عَجبا

    Of fine proportions and figure

    Called As-Saba for his gentleness, speed

  71. زَعمت أن الإِنس ملاكٌ لَكُم

    وَمحسنون في الَّذي جاءوا بِكُم

    Light gait and vigor

    The female said, what nonsense

  72. وَإِن رَب العَرش قَد سَلطَهُم

    عَلَيكُم حَقاً وَقَد بَسطهم

    Nothing but lies and wonder

    Obstinate, hostile, perverse

  73. مِن أَين قُلت ذاكَ يا مَسكين

    ابن لي الحَق فَما يَبين

    Unjust in debate, you do not judge fairly

    This is clear disbelief in the Maker

  74. أَي دَليل لَكَ في ذي الدعوى

    لِتَجعل الشُكر مَكان الشكوى

    And His aims for law and faith

    He said, there is no disbelief

  75. إِن قُلت قالوا قُلت دَعوى مِنهُم

    مثلك يَرويها لمثلي عَنهُم

    Or disbelief in messengers and God

    She said, do you not know the Maker

  76. وَأَن تَقل بِالرأي وَالعُقول

    فَإِنَّهُ مُشتَرك الدليل

    Ordained fate, giving and withholding

    And originator of creation by design

  77. لَو كانَ مَعقولاً فَهمناه مَعاً

    إِذ اِستَوَينا في العُقول أَجمَعا

    Seeking benefit for people

    He created everything

  78. إِن كانَت القُدرة حَقاً فَكَذا

    حق عَلَيهم ما لَقوا مِن الأَذى

    For their sake, so hear the truth from me

    To worship and unify Him

  79. وَكُل ما يَجري عَلَيهم حَق

    وَكُل ما يُقال فيهم صدق

    Thank and glorify Him

    So creation became their servant

  80. وَلَيسَ في العالم ظلم جار

    إِذ كل ما يَجري بِإذن الباري

    And I do not accuse in my words

    Any justice you see from them

  81. وَإِن يَكونوا مَلَكوا أَفهاما

    وَفطنةً ساسوا بِها الأَناما

    Is free of fault and rebuke

    Their brows bear marks from prostration

  82. فَذاكَ يَنهاهم عَن العُدوان

    أَجَل وَيَدعوهم إِلى الإِحسان

    Branded in serving the Worshipped God

    Gifted with fasting and devotion

  83. وَلَيسَ مِن عَقل الفَتى وَكَرَمه

    إِفساد شَخص كامل لقرمه

    Rejecting pleasures for asceticism

    Their hearts are springs of faith

  84. وَكانَ في الخَيل حصان أَشقَر

    لَهُ رواء حسن وَمَنظَر

    Their breasts treasure troves of Quran

    In them are altruism, generosity

  85. يُدعى الصبا لرفقه وَسرعته

    في جريه وَشده وَخفته

    Patience, loyalty, and sincerity

    How many accepted prayers

  86. فَقالَت العَنقاء قَول منكر

    لِقَوله ما أَنتَ إِلا مفتر

    That bring down rain from clouds

    Some abstain from lawful things

  87. مُكابِرٌ مُعاند محرف

    وَفي الجِدال ظالم لا تنصف

    In reverence for their Exalted Lord

    Some spend their wealth

  88. هَذا جحود ظاهر للصانع

    وَقَصده بِالحَق وِالشرائع

    For His sake, gently asking

    Some battle with themselves

  89. قالَ وَما فيهِ مِن الجحود

    وَالكُفر بِالرسل وَبِالمَعبود

    Calm as armor in fervor

    Some melt themselves on pilgrimage

  90. قالَت أَما علمت أَن الصانِعا

    أَجرى القَضاء مُعطياً وَمانِعا

    Through vast empty plains and roads

    Among them prophets and messengers

  91. وَموجد الخَلق عَلى النظام

    قَصداً إِلى مَصالح الأَنام

    Wealth and power are but their shadow

    In them are resolve, determination, and valor

  92. مِن أَجلِهم أَوجد كُل شَيء

    وَكُل رُشد في الوَرى وَغى

    Nothing nobler after mind and speech

    They enjoy delights of food

  93. وَالأَرض دار لَهُم وَالفلك

    سَقف لَهُم وَجوه وَالحبك

    And wearing all fine and plush

    Without man, the world's virtue

  94. وَكُل ما في الأَرض مِن موجود

    لَهُم بِلُطف الصانع المَعبود

    Would not be known to minds

    These sublime merits would not appear

  95. لَما اِرتَضى الإِنسان بِالتكليف

    حَباهُ بِالإِكرام وَالتشريف

    For this world and next are theirs

    Their lineages are known and protected

  96. وَاختَصهُ بِالسر وَالمُعامله

    فَضلاً وَنَفساً للعلوم قابله

    In guarded books, concealed

    Their secrets are hidden, do not appear

  97. وَالوَحي وَالثَواب وَالعِقاب

    وَالوَعظ وَالعِتاب وَالحِساب

    Veiled from all, unseen

    In them are sciences and etiquette

  98. وَالعَقل وَالنطف وَحُسن السيره

    وَالفَهم وَالنية وَالسريره

    Theirs are dreams and insights

    Created in the best mold

  99. فكانَ أَعلى العالمين رتبه

    وَخَيرهم مَنزِلَة وَقربه

    Preferred in fate and bodies

    Their forms are made to measure

  100. وَلَم يَكُن مَقصوده بِالخلق

    إِلا بَني آدم فَاِسمَع صدقي

    No smallness that mars them or largeness

    Proportionate stature, straight

  101. لِيَعبُدوه وَيوحدوه

    وَيَشكروه وَيُمَجِدوه

    Acceptable and beloved image

    Then the smallest rules a thousand of you

  102. فَكانَ كُل الخَلق عَبداً لَهُم

    وَلَستُ في مَقالتَي أتهم

    With his mind, leading you by a rope

    Subduing the mighty elephant and lion

  103. وَكُل ما يَظهَر مِنهُم عَدل

    لَيسَ عَلَيهم سبة وَعَذل

    With cunning until it becomes tame

    Charting the stars in their orbits

  104. جباههم مِن أَثر السجود

    مَوسومة في خدمة المَعبود

    Preserving bodies from demise

    With medicine, management, and treatment

  105. قَد نَحلوا بِالصوم وَالعِباده

    وَرَفضوا اللذات للزهاده

    From raging pains and afflictions

    In truth, your disbelief in their excellence

  106. قُلوبهُم مَعادن الإِيمان

    صُدورهم خَزائن القُرآن

    And criticism of their unknown deeds

    Is like the trader's ignorant wife

  107. وَفيهم الإِيثار وَالسخاء

    وَالصبر وَالوَفاء وَالصفاء

    Deceived by her husband's flaws

    Finding fault in merit and virtues

  108. كَم دَعوات لَهُم مُجابَه

    تَستَنزل القطر مِن السحابه

    Through ignorance of his faults and habits

    Who is she, he said, and what is her story?

  109. وَمِنهُم مَن يَترُك الحَلالا

    تَورعا لربِهِ تَعالى

    Why do we merit her examples?

  110. وَمِنهُم من يُنفق الأَموالا

    لوجهِهِ وَيلطف السُؤالا

  111. وَمِنهُم مُجاهد بِنَفسِه

    هادِئَةً في الروع مثل تُرسه

  112. وَمَن يُذيب نَفسه للحج

    مِن كُل فَج شاسع وَنَهج

  113. وَالأَنبياء مِنهُم وَالرسل

    وَالمال وَالسلطان وَهوَ ظل

  114. وَفيهم حَزم وَعَزم وَصلف

    وَلَيسَ بَعدَ العَقل وَالنطق شَرَف

  115. وَلَهُم اللذات في المَطاعم

    وَلبس كُل رائق وَناعم

  116. لَولا بَنو آدم بَينَ العالم

    ما بانَ لِلعُقول فَضل العالم

  117. وَلَم تَبن هَذي المَعالي الفاخره

    فَإِنَّما الدنيا لَهُم وَالآخره

  118. أَنسابهم مَحفوظة مَعروفه

    في صُحف مَصونة مَكنوفه

  119. أَسرارهم خافية لا تظهر

    مَستورة عَن الوَرى لا تنظر

  120. وَفيهم العُلوم وَالآداب

    وَلَهُم الأَحلام وَالأَلباب

  121. قَد خلقوا في أَحسَن التقويم

    وَفضلوا بِالقَدر وَالجسوم

  122. وَإِنَّما أَجسامهُم عَلى قَدر

    لا صغرٌ يَشينها وَلا كبر

  123. وَقامة سَوية مَنصوبه

    وَصورة مَقبولة مَحبوبه

  124. ثُم الصغير مِنهُم بِعَقله

    يَقود أَلفاً مِنكُم بِحبله

  125. وَيَقهر الفيل العَظيم وَالأَسَد

    بِكَيده حَتّى يَعود كَالفَهَد

  126. وَيَرصد النجوم في أَفلاكِها

    وَيَحفَظ الجُسوم مِن هلاكِها

  127. بِالطب وَالتدبير وَالمُعالجه

    مِن الشكايا وَالبَلايا الهائِجَه

  128. وَإِنَّما أَنتُم بِكُفر فَضلِهم

    وَذم ما لَم تَعرِفوا مِن فعلهم

  129. كَاِمرَأة التاجر ضعف عَقلها

    وَالجَهل أَغراها بِعَيب بعلها

  130. عابثة بِالفَضل وَالمَحاسن

    لجهلها بِزائن وَشائن

  131. فَقال من هَذي وَكَيفَ القصه

    وَلم بِنا أَمثالها مُختَصه
