1. زعموا لي أنّ نفسي درّةٌ

    تُعجِزُ الوصفَ وجسمي صَدَفَه

    They claimed my soul's a pearl

    Beyond words, my body a shell

  2. وأنا واللهِ ما أعرفُها

    ليس في الأخلاق مثلُ النَّصَفَه

    By God, I know it not

    In morals there's nothing as vile

  3. إنّما أعرفُ جسمي وحدَه

    وأرى أعضاءَه المؤتلفَه

    I only know my body

    And see its joined limbs

  4. آه مني أَعمُرُ الحبسَ الذي

    هو لا شكّ لنفسي متَلفَه

    Oh me, I inhabit this prison

    Which no doubt consumes my soul

  5. يا بَني التلميذ لو وافيتُكم

    لم تكن نفسي بأهلي شَغِفَه

    O students, had I been with you

    My soul wouldn't yearn for my family

  6. إنما أطلقتُ كرمانَ بكم

    إنّكم لي عِوضٌ ما أشرفَه

    I set free my generosity upon you

    You are to me the noblest substitute

  7. برئيسِ الحُكَماءِ المرتَجى

    إنّه لي جنّة مُختَرفَه

    By the chief of wise men hoped for

    He is to me a well-adorned paradise

  8. شمسُ مجدٍ لا تَراها أبدا

    عن سماواتِ العُلا منكسِفَه

    A sun of glory seen never

    Eclipsed from the highest heavens

  9. جَلَّ أن يدرك وصف مجدهِ

    إنّه أكثر من كلِّ صفه

    Too lofty to be described his glory

    Greater than any attribute

  10. لو تمكّنتُ لكانت جُملَتي

    في زوايا دارِه معتكِفَه

    Had I been able, my phrases

    In his abode's corners would've lodged

  11. فبه تَفخَرُ الدنيا التي

    أصبحت من غيره مستنكِفَه

    Through him the world boasts

    Now spurned without him

  12. إنّما أحبو بني التلميذ بال

    مدح إذ كلّهم ذو معرفه

    I love the students without

    Praise, all being knowledgeable

  13. فابنُ يحيى منهمُ مُحيِي النّدى

    زادِ في الجود على مَن خَلَفَه

    Among them Ibn Yahya reviver of dew

    Increased in generosity over predecessors

  14. حقّقَ الكنيةَ من والده

    كرَما فيه وطبعا ألِفَه

    He realized the nickname from his father

    Generosity and congenial nature

  15. وهمُ مِن صاعدٍ عن سادةٍ

    بأبي مجدهمُ ما أنطَفَه

    They from ascending from chiefs

    Through their glory unparalleled

  16. لا تَقِسهُم بالورى كلّهمُ

    فَتَقِس لُبَّ السَرِي بالجُعدُفَه

    Do not compare them to all people

    Lest you compare pearl to shell

  17. فإن إبراهيمَ لا هوتُ العُلا

    من دعاهُ بشَرا ما أنصفَه

    For Ibrahim did not lower the heights

    Who called him mortal, how unjust!

  18. يا رئيسَ الحكماءِ استَجلِها

    من بناتِ الفِكر بِكراً مُترَفَه

    O chief of wise men, seek from him

    The choicest unmarried daughter of thought

  19. إنّني أنفذتُ نَجلي قاصدا

    أشتكي دهرا قليلَ النَّصفَه

    I sent my son to complain

    Of a time rarely equitable
