ما نقيُّ العِرض طاهرُ الجَسَد

كُلَّما خالطه الماءُ فَسَد

The pure of lineage, pure of body,

As soon as he mingled with water, was spoiled,

خالط الماء القراح فغوى

بعدما قد كان من أهل الرَّشد

The jar mingled with water and went astray,

After it had been of the rightly-guided.

عجميّ الأصل ثم حُسنُهُ

عندما صاد الغزالةَ الأسَد

Persian in origin, then its beauty,

When it hunted the gazelle, the lion.

واسمُهُ اسمُ امرأةٍ مصحفاً

ولقد يكونُ وصفاً لوَلَد

And its name is the name of a woman misspelled,

And it may well be a description of a boy.

هاكَهُ قد بَهَرت أنواره

فارمِ بالفكر تُصِب تُصِب قَصدَ السَّدد

So cast with thinking, you will hit, hit the mark.
