Come now to the dwelling of the beloved and give greetings

And pitch your tent, for the caravan is not pitching

And say to she who my heart is enamoured with her love

Indeed for yearning after union my soul is the slain

And the ecstasy of love did not inspire this abode

With the meanings of ecstasy, every translator

Nor did my eyes behold a lodging I entered,

Nor a sanctuary, but that I shed my blood therein

Nor did those dwellings leave me a lesson

That my heart in tears pours itself out lamenting

And none drew this weeping save the chanting melody

To which every chant gives precedence in merit

The beguiling words in their tunes

From sweet drunkenness, the forbidden wines

So O fleeting vision that I have been bereft of

Your place in my heart, know your place!

Your person in my eye, your pleasure in my hand,

Your voice in my hearing, your memory on my lips

Gratifying you that a state has delighted you

My wakefulness, my misery, my excess of pain

And enough for she who weeps with ardent eyelids

That I make her weep with compressed eyelids

I endure the blackness of night sleepless

And meet the whiteness of dawn cheerless
