1. بكُلّ والدة تفدى وما ولدت

    زهراء طيبة الأعراق مذكارُ

    With every mother who sacrifices herself although she gave birth

    To a beautiful, pure-blooded daughter endowed with glory

  2. أحلَّها من ذُرى عدنان في شرف

    عالي الذرى ماله من ذا الورى جار

    She descends from the best lineage of Adnan with eminent nobility

    None in this world can match her stature

  3. بل ليتَ شعري ما يغني الفداءُ وقد

    تشبثت للعنايا فيك أظفار

    Yet, alas, of what use is sacrificing when

    Claws of tribulation cling fast to you

  4. يا أكرم الأمهاتِ الطاهرات لقد

    أودعتِ قلبي غليلا دونه النارُ

    O most generous of pure mothers, indeed

    You have left in my heart distress that only fire can relieve

  5. بيني وبينك بُعد المشرقين على

    قٌرب المزار وما شَّطت بك الدارُ

    Between us is the breadth of two horizons, yet

    Your shrine is near, though you did not reside here

  6. سقا ثراكِ وللسقيا حللت به

    كفافُهُ دِيمة وَطفاءُ مِدرارَ

    Your tomb is watered, and for watering it

    A perpetually flowing spring suffices

  7. إذا بكت فوقه انداؤها ضحكت

    خِلالَه من أنيق النبت أزهار

    When the echo of her weeping sounded above it

    From amidst the delicate plants, flowers laughed

  8. قل للجَنوبِ إذا وافت مُسَلِّمةً

    واستصحبتها عشيَّاتُ وأسحارُ

    Tell the south wind, when it comes greeting

    Accompanied by evenings and dawns

  9. عُوجي على مسجد الأقدام واعتمدي

    سمت الشمال ولا يأخذك تسيارُ

    Bend toward the Mosque of the Feet, and depend

    On the direction of the north, and let not wandering distract you

  10. ونكسي الجوسق العالي ولا تقفي

    ما لم تُلاقِك أعلامٌ وأحجار

    Lower the high saddlebag, and do not stop

    Until flags and stones meet you

  11. عن يسرة المسجد المشهور معرفة

    بذي العمودين عرفان وأنكار

    On the right side of the well-known mosque—the one

    With two columns—is recognition and denial

  12. خَلي الصفاتِ ولكن حيثما سطعت

    من القرافة أضواء وأنوار

    Bypass the porticoes, but wherever lights

    And illuminations shine from the dome

  13. وفاض عَرف كما قد فَضّ في ملأٍ

    من التجار عيابَ المسك عطّارُ

    And fragrance overflows as musk perfume overflowed

    Among throngs of merchants and perfumers

  14. فثمّ حُطَّت عن الأعوادِ سارية

    من الغمام ثناها الدهر مسيار

    There the curtains were lowered from the pillars—

    The vicissitudes of time wore them threadbare

  15. وثم باب إلى الفردوس مختصر

    منه الطريق فنعم البابُ والدار

    And there is a door leading to Paradise, a shortcut

    By which is the path—so excellent is the door and the house

  16. يا ربّ كن عند ظني فيك لي ولها

    كذاك يفعل رحبُ الطول غفارُ

    O Lord, be as I think You are to me and to her

    So does the Most Forgiving, Vast in Generosity, act

  17. قد كنتُ أحسبهم في القاطنين معي

    ما كنت أحسب أن القوم زوّارُ

    I used to think they were residing with me

    I did not think they were visitors

  18. لا غَرَّني أمل من بعدها أبداً

    هيهات كُلٌ من التأميل غرَّارُ

    No hope after her will ever delude me

    Far from it! All hope misleads

  19. من كان يخبرني والدار جامعة

    أن الأحبة بعد العين آثار

    If only someone had told me while the house was full

    That the loved ones were, after loss, but traces

  20. يا منزلا بات من سُكانه عُطلا

    ماق يل حلُّوه حتى قيل قد ساروا

    O dwelling that some of its inhabitants spent the night in it

    Then, before morning, it was said they departed

  21. قضيت منهمومن إيناسهم وطراً

    وقد بقى لك أوطار وأوطار

    I spent happy moments with them, and they were

    Phases that for you remain, phase after phase

  22. كل يفارق في الدنيا أحبَّته

    وإنما هو إعجالٌ وانظار

    All in life are parted from their loved ones

    But it is only hastening and respite

  23. ونحن سَفر مطايانا إلى امدٍ

    أعمارنا وفنون العيش أسفار

    Our journey on steeds is toward a time

    When our lives and worldly arts are but travels

  24. لا ينفع المرء إلاّ ما يقدِّمه

    لا درهم بعده يبقى ولا دارٌ

    No man benefits except by what he puts forth

    No coins remain thereafter, nor dwellings

  25. صبراً فما لقتيل الدهر من قَودٍ

    يُرجى ولا لعقير الموت عَقّار

    Patience, for the slain of time have no retaliation

    And for the venom of death there is no antidote

  26. يا دهر أعظم شيء هدّني أسفاً

    ظعينة لك لم يدرك لها ثار

    O Time, the greatest thing that saddened me

    Was misfortune for which no vengeance was attained

  27. لو كنتَ يا دهر من يلقى مبارزةً

    أو كان يدفع بالمقدار مقدار

    If you were, O Time, one who meets in battle

    Or one who repays like for like

  28. ثناكَ جيش يُثير النقع مشتمل

    لكنّه بالقنا الخطِّي خَطَّارُ

    I would rouse against you an army that stirs up pools

    But you are a coward in the narrowest sense

  29. قضت ونحن حواليها نُطيف بها

    كأنها بيننا عقرى وأيسارُ

    While we roamed around her, it was as though

    She was both to our right and left

  30. يلقى الفتى وهو مضطرٌ مصائبه

    كأنما هو للتسليم مختارُ

    The youth faces his afflictions though coerced

    As if he had chosen to submit

  31. وكم لنا في خِلال العيش من قدم

    فُسَرّ أن تتقضَّى وهي أعمارُ

    How many steps in the course of life

    Were cut short though they were our lifespans

  32. للمرء في المرء تنبيه وموعظة

    لو كان ينفع إعذار وإنذارُ

    Man is admonished and exhorted by man

    If only regret and warning were of benefit
