Peace upon the distant one, living far from home;
A lovesick lover's greeting, despondent over him.
A gazelle whose grazing grounds lie by the Balikh,
As far as Zakka Monastery, then the Wooden Bridge.
O you who helped bring harm upon yourself
By willingly leaving behind the one you loved:
I shall conceal—and concealment is in my nature—
My love for the one I love, under cover of one I do not love.
