تُبْدي صُدوداُ وتُخْفي تَحْتَه مِقَةً
فالنَّفْسُ راضِيةٌ والطَّرْفُ غَضْبانُ
You show aversion and hide affection beneath it.
She shows affability yet hides malice underneath,
So the soul is content, while the gaze is angry.
So her soul's content though her eyes show wrath.
يا من وَضَعْتُ لَهُ خَدِّي فَذَلَّلهُ
وَلَيْس فَوْقي سِوى الرَّحمنِ سُلْطانُ
O you for whom I laid down my cheek, and who humbled it,
O you whom I humbled when I offered my cheek,
There is no sovereign above me but the Most Merciful.
None has authority over me except the Merciful.
