1. We had a sturdy nabʿa tree whose branches sheltered us,

and its roots had all but reached their full growth.

  2. Indeed, our souls can find deaths sweet,

while leaving another, bitter one untasted.

  3. My head was grayed, before its season of gray, by

death’s thunderclaps among us and its lightning flashes.

  4. I saw deaths appear, returning again and again,

to our abode—their road to us an easy one.

  5. I have divided my soul into two parts:

one part is with the dead; the other remains with me.

  6. And while the soul hopes for something still far off

in its affairs, it meets, before reaching it, what holds it back.

  7. And while the soul says, “Tomorrow I shall do

this and that,” its clinging doom catches hold of it.
