Whiter than the sons of Sa’d ibn Malik

I drank from the morning star until it dripped

And until the near person in his intoxication

Saw figures, so he called “Come, O Sa’d!” and exalted

So I said, “You are drunk,” and he denied stubbornly

“God forbid that I jest and get drunk!”

So I said to him, “Drink this, it is Babylonian,

You will imagine it to be fine musk and ambergris with it”

So when he tasted it, he spat it out, then he

Held himself together, silent and pensive,

And said “Do it again.” I said, “Wait a bit,”

He pondered a little, then stood up mumbling,

So I said to him, “Sleep an hour, it seems

From the drunkenness there appears in you chatter.”
