لقد سررت غداة النهر إذ برزت

أشياخ همدان فيها المجد والخير

I was delighted one morning at the riverbank

When the elders of Hamdan appeared, full of glory and goodness,

يقودهم ملكٌ جزلٌ مواهبُه

واري الزناد لدى الخيرات مذكور

Led by a magnificent king whose talents are abundant,

The helper against adversity, renowned for his virtues,

أعني سعيد بن قيس خير ذي يزنٍ

سامي العماد لدى السلطان محبور

I mean Sa'eed bin Qais, the best of the highborn,

His glory lofty with the Sultan, held in high esteem,

ما أن يلين إذا ما سيم منقصة

لكن له غضب فيها وتنكير

He does not relent when confronted with dishonor,

But meets it with anger and condemnation,

أغرُّ أبلج يستسقى الغمام به

جنابه الدهر يضحي وهو ممطور

Dazzlingly fair, clouds are summoned by him,

His stance ever victorious though destiny frowns.
