1. Sorrow darkens souls, and thereby leads them astray

    from the vision of God, the Most High above all creation.

  2. They remain floundering blindly in an obscure despair,

    averse to reading and to remembering.

  3. Then every beautiful act of worship turns away from them,

    until they think they will never prevail.

  4. Thus each soul seems as though the sorrow within it

    were a worm sinking in its fang to gnaw away,

  5. until it sees the soul no longer seeking repose,

    and likewise no longer willing to receive the purest words.

  6. So accept a sorrow you hope for through repentance;

    from it you will gain peace of soul, beyond dispute.
