أرى الدهر لا يبقي قديماً ومُحدَثاً

ولكنه يسعى بنا سعيَ جعفرِ

I see time spares neither old nor new,

Yet it takes us on Ja'far's brisk quest.

أباد ملوك الأرض كسرى وقيصراً

وكرَّ على المأمون يوماً وجعفر

It destroyed the kings of earth, Chosroes and Caesar,

And turned away from al-Ma'mun one day, and Ja'far.

ومزَّق أحزابَ النبيين كلهم

وشتت في الآفاق أبناء جعفر

It tore apart the parties of all the prophets,

And scattered Ja'far's sons throughout the horizons.

ترى آلَه ضمن الفدافد لامعاً

فتحسبه من ظمأةٍ ماءَ جعفر

You see, within the successive generations, a brilliant

Line that you'd think were Ja'far's thirsty drinkers.

ولكنه يغويك مكراً كما غوت

مُحِبَّ سوادَ الشعر ملساءُ جعفر

But it seduces you cunningly, as it seduced

The lovers of black hair and smooth Ja'far.

فما زلت أبلو طبعه وهو ناشرٌ

وأفلي إليه كل طودٍ وجعفر

So I continued to test its nature while it spreads,

And I leaned onto every towering height and Ja'far,

إلى أن رأيت المرءَ تغنيه خِلقةٌ

عن الحَلْي والأقواتِ كسرةُ جعفر

Until I saw man whom a disposition sings praise

Rather than trinkets and riches, Chip of Ja'far.
