1. أيا أغنياءَ الروح صونوا كنوزَكم

    وخافوا عليها من لصوص بني الدهرِ

    O you who are spiritually wealthy preserve your treasures

    And protect them from the thieves of time

  2. فما أخبث الدهر الكذوب بأهله

    وما أكثر الآفات في الدهر والعمر

    For how deceitful is impetuous time with its people

    And how numerous are its harms in life and age

  3. وما أسعد الصدّيقَ فيه وسعيُهُ

    قويمٌ بنور الصدق في السر والجهر

    And how happy is the sincere friend in it and his effort

    Righteous with the light of truthfulness in private and public

  4. خلافٌ له قد زاد فيه خلافُه

    كأن الثريا قارنت مطلعَ الفجر

    Unlike him, his disagreement has increased in it

    As if Sirius accompanied the dawn

  5. كأن نفوس الخلق فيه غريقةٌ

    بدهرٍ كبحرٍ ماج بالإثم والكفر

    As if the souls of people in it are drowning

    In a time like a turbulent sea with sin and blasphemy

  6. ولكن بوناً بين غرقى بأبحرٍ

    وبين غريقٍ في المآثم والوزر

    Yet there is a separation between the drowning in seas

    And one drowning in sins and burdens

  7. يقوم غريقُ الماء حيّاً على الرجا

    ولكن غريق الإثم ميتاً على الجمر

    The one drowning in water survives hoping for life

    While the one drowning in sin is dead over embers

  8. إذا كان ذا لا بد منه فقم بنا

    نمزِّقُ ثوبَ المال بالنسك في القفر

    If the inevitable is at hand, stand with us

    We tear the dress of money with asceticism in the wastelands

  9. دخلنا إلى الدنيا عراةً وإننا

    عراةً نفارقها ولا خُلفَ في الأمر

    We entered the world naked and we will surely

    Leave it naked, no doubt in the matter

  10. فإن تخرجوا والقلب حيث كنوزكم

    تَروا ما يرى الملّاحُ في ملتقى البحر

    So if you come out while your heart is where your treasures are

    You will see what the sailor sees where the seas meet

  11. قبيحٌ بنا نبغي الضلالة كالهدى

    ونحن نعد السهل خيراً من الوعر

    It would be ugly of us to desire misguidance like guidance

    And we consider the easy better than the difficult

  12. منيَّتُنا كالفيء لاحقةٌ بنا

    وهمَّتنا في الزائلات من العمر

    Our death follows us

    And our ambition is in the transient things of life

  13. فتنشرنا الدنيا وتطوي حياتَنا

    وليس لنا منها سوى الطي والنشر

    So the world distracts us and folds our lives

    And we have of it nothing but folding and unfolding

  14. ويُعقبُها التأبيد والفعل ناظرٌ

    إلى الخير ثم الشر في النهي والأمر

    And it is followed by eternity and the action looks

    To good then evil in prohibition and command

  15. فواعجباً والناس نُوّام شهوةٍ

    أنُوّامُ هبّوا والحَقوا سَفَرَ السَفر

    So strange are people intoxicated with desire's sleep

    Intoxicated, awake, set out on the journey of the journey

  16. إذا سرقتنا شهوةٌ مكرت بنا

    بلذتها والصيد يؤخذ بالمكر

    If a desire steals us, it tricks us

    With its pleasure, and game is caught with trickery

  17. ولكنها تُهدي إلى من يحبها

    ويعشقها التسويف بالويل والخسر

    But it guides those who love it

    And are passionate about it to procrastination, doom and loss

  18. فتربحها من حيث تدري بكذبها

    وتخسرُها من حيث إنك لا تدري

    It profits from where you know its lies

    And makes you lose from where you do not know

  19. فأولها سهلٌ وحلوٌ مذاقه

    وآخرها مرٌّ أمرُّّ من الصبر

    Its beginning is easy and sweet is its taste

    And its ending bitter - more bitter than aloes

  20. أرتك المزايا البيض حتى تحسرت

    أرتك المنايا السود بالأسيُفِ الحمر

    I left the white privileges until I regretted

    I left the black deaths by the red swords

  21. وإن أجيراً يأخذ الأجر عندها

    لمثل أسير قد سبته بلا أجر

    If a hireling takes payment from it

    He is like a captive, captured without pay

  22. فأحسنُ ما تلقاه فيها هو التقى

    وأقبح ما يلقاك فيها الذي يُزري

    So the best that you will meet in it is piety

    And the ugliest that meets you in it is what degrades

  23. فما أسعد الإنسان إن ظن حُسنَها

    قبيحاً وأشقاه إذا كان لا يدري

    So happy is the person if he deems its beauty ugly

    And wretched is he if he does not know

  24. مواسمها تحوي رديّاً وجيداً

    وما أحسنَ البنيانَ فيها على الصخر

    Its seasons contain both inferior and good

    And how excellent is building on solid rock in it

  25. فإن رُمت خيراً نلت خيراً وإن ترُم

    قبيحاً تجده فالحسام على النحر

    If you throw good, you obtain good and if you throw

    Evil, you will find it. Swords at the throat

  26. وشاهدُنا ما قد رأينا مثاله

    بلوطٍ وأيوبٍ وآدم في الصبر

    And we witnessed examples of what we saw

    In the patience of Job, Lot and Adam

  27. فآدم في الفردوس باعدَ فخرَه

    ولوطٌ بسادومٍ توشَّح بالفخر

    Adam in Paradise lost his pride

    While Lot in Sodom dressed himself with pride

  28. ففي مسكن الأحياء قد مات عائشٌ

    وفي مسكن الأموات قد عاش ذو الذكر

    In the abode of the living, one who lived in luxury died

    While in the abode of the dead one with remembrance lived

  29. وأيوب في الحالين أصبح ظافراً

    بحال الغنى والجاه والذل والفقر

    And Job in both states emerged victorious

    In the state of wealth, glory, humility and poverty

  30. هو العقل في الإنسان إن ضل واهتدى

    له الإختيار التام في النهي والأمر

    It is the intellect in man, if he strays and is guided

    He has full choice in prohibition and command

  31. أأيامَنا ما كنتِ إلّا تجارةً

    وقد سُرقت بالقصف واللهو والسكر

    Oh our days, you were nothing but business

    And you were stolen by frivolity, play and intoxication

  32. فأذنبتُ واستأنفتُ ذنبي فلم أجد

    لنفسي وقد تابت خلاصاً من الحشر

    I sinned and repeated my sin but did not find

    Salvation for my repentant soul from reckoning

  33. وأنظمُ في نفسي عقودَ مآثمٍ

    وأنثرُ خسرانَ الدقائق من عمري

    And I compose in myself bonds of sins

    And I scatter the loss of moments from my life

  34. إلى أن ثنيت النفس عن طرق الهدى

    وأفنيت عمري فيه بالنظم والنثر

    Until I bent the soul from the paths of guidance

    And wasted my life in it with prose and verse

  35. وها أنا من صوت النشور محيَّرٌ

    إذا ما دعاني اللَه من جانب القبر

    And here I am, confused by the sound of resurrection

    When God summons me from the side of the grave

  36. أتوب ولكن لا ثبات لتوبةٍ

    بعمرٍ به الأوزار كالماء بالخمر

    I repent but the repentance has no constancy

    In a life whose burdens are like water mixed with wine

  37. رأى الناسَ يومَ الدين والعدل حاكمٌ

    وناهيك عن عدلٍ أدقَّ من الفكر

    People saw a day of recompense and justice ruling

    Let alone justice subtler than thought

  38. وكلٌّ بأثواب الندامة مكتسٍ

    على السعي إلّا التام في السر والجهر

    And each clad in robes of regret

    Except those perfected in private and public

  39. فما أشجعَ الشُّهْداءَ والحربُ قائمٌ

    ولاقَوا زُؤامَ الموت بالبيضِ والسمر

    How bold are the martyrs though battle rages

    They faced the adversity of death in white and brown

  40. وما أسعدَ النساكَ إذ تم سعيهم

    ورَدّوا هوى اللذات بالسود والصفر

    How happy are the ascetics when their effort is complete

    They repelled the desires of pleasures in black and yellow

  41. وما أجملَ الأبرارَ والبِرُّ ثوبُهم

    يرومون مجد اللَه بالأثوُبِ الخضر

    And how beautiful are the righteous whose clothing is righteousness

    Seeking the glory of God in green attire

  42. إذا شاهد الأطهارُ مجداً مؤثّلاً

    لديهم وهم منه كشمس لدى البدر

    When the pure witness a towering glory

    Theirs, while they are to it as the sun to the moon

  43. يصوغون مدحاً تمَّ إذ تمَّ عمرُهم

    مُجِدّاً على الأحزان والضيق والفقر

    They compose a praise when their lives are complete

    Glorifying over grief, distress and poverty

  44. وربُّك يرميهم بعينٍ بها الرضا

    لأنهمُ أرضوه بالحمد والشكر

    And your Lord gazes at them with a pleased eye

    For they pleased Him with gratitude and thanks

  45. وتنحدر الأشرار بالويل والردى

    إلى دار نار العار بالذل والقهر

    While the wicked plunge into misery and loss

    To the abode of Hellfire’s disgrace in humiliation and coercion

  46. كأن تلكم النيرانَ وهي عليهمُ

    جبالُ رصاصٍ لا جبالٌ من الصخر

    As if those fires, while above them,

    Are mountains of lead, not mountains of stone

  47. يودون ألّا يولدوا ثم يقبروا

    ولا يوعدوا من بعدُ بالبعث والحشر

    They wish they were never born, then buried,

    Promised no resurrection or reckoning after

  48. ترى كُمَّلاً في حبِّ من قد أتاهمُ ال

    كمالُ كبدرٍ تم في ليلة البدر

    You see some enraptured in the love of the One who

    Reached them with perfection like the full moon at its brightest night

  49. غدوا إخوةً فضلاً وأربابَ نسبةٍ

    إلى مالكٍ للفضل بالعز والنصر

    They have become brothers of superiority and kinship

    To a Master of Grace with might and victory

  50. لأنهمُ لم يسلكوا مسلك الردى

    وتموا بجسمٍ جل عن دنس الأصر

    For they did not walk the path of wickedness

    And they perfected themselves with a body beyond the filth of shackles

  51. وما وَلَدُ الإنسانِ إلّا مضاعفٌ

    وما ضِعفُهُ إلّا من البطن والقبر

    A person is born nothing but doubles

    And his weakness is only of the womb and grave

  52. فمولده بالبطن يأتي إلى الشقا

    ومولدُه بالقبر للدين والأجر

    His birth by the womb comes with adversity

    While his birth by the grave is for religion and reward

  53. سألتك يا مولاي ساعةَ مولادي

    من القبر والأموات تَنهضُ للنشر

    I asked You, my Master, for the hour of my birth

    From the grave when corpses rise for assembly

  54. رضاءً وغفراناً وعفواً ورحمةً

    بمن ساغ فيها المدحُ بالنظم والنثر

    Favor, pardon, forgiveness and mercy

    For she who poetry flows praising her in prose and verse

  55. وحلَّ لها بِكرُ الخلائق كلهم

    وناهيكَ من بِكرٍ تَجسَّدَ من بكر

    And to her the best of all creation submitted

    Let alone the best who incarnated from the best

  56. فإن تدعها يوماً يجبك حنوُّها

    أنا يُسرُ من يدعو بمريمَ في العسر

    If you call upon her one day, her affection will answer you

    I facilitate one who prays through Maryam in hardship

  57. فبي خَلَصَ الإنسانُ بعد هلاكه

    وبي جَذَب الإيمانُ ناصية الكفر

    Through me humanity was saved after its ruin

    And through me faith pulled the forelock of blasphemy

  58. وبي أُخِذ الشيطان وهو مغللٌ

    أسيراً ولا يرجو الخلاص من الأسر

    Through me Satan was seized bound

    A captive with no hope of release from captivity

  59. فآدم قد أضحى بحواء مائتاً

    وبي قام حيّاً نائلَ العفو من بِكري

    Adam was ruined for Eve's sake

    While through me he rose living, granted pardon from my purity

  60. بحوّا تردى الخزيَ غِرّاً وإنَّه

    بفضلي تردّى المجد دهراً على دهر

    Through Eve, shame fell bitterly while

    Through my grace, glory flows eternally

  61. فيا سعدَ من قد جاء نحويَ طالباً

    بتوبته عفواً ومغفرةَ الوِزر

    So happy is one who comes seeking me

    In repentance, pardon and forgiveness of sins

  62. أتيتُكِ يا ملجا الخطاة مؤمّلاً

    غياثَك في يوم القيامة والحشر

    I came to you, refuge of sinners, hoping

    for your relief on the Day of Resurrection and Reckoning
